Threads Introduces Direct Link Feature to Boost Open Social Web Evangelism

Meta’s contender to X, Instagram Threads, is taking a huge leap forward by simplifying access to fediverse settings. Instead of cumbersome explanations and manual adjustments, users can now enable these settings via a straightforward URL. This means you can just click a link and activate the fediverse sharing option instantly, making it easier for users to request others to enable this feature.

The upgrade was showcased live at FediForum, an online “unconference” dedicated to developers and enthusiasts exploring fediverse and related technologies. These include innovative protocols like ActivityPub, the AT Protocol used by social networks such as Bluesky, and Nostr, which notably has backing from Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey.

Fediverse sharing allows Threads content to reach a wider audience beyond Meta’s ecosystem, integrating with platforms like Mastodon through the ActivityPub protocol. This feature sets Threads apart from other social media apps by leveraging open protocols to facilitate broader connectivity rather than restricting users to its own platform.

Despite its benefits, fediverse sharing isn’t enabled by default. Consequently, many users may not be aware of its value or how to turn it on. This often leads to public requests within popular Threads accounts, prompting users to enable the feature.

When fediverse sharing is activated, Threads posts can be simultaneously shared within the app and across the open social web. This is made possible by ActivityPub, an open protocol developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), which allows compatibility with servers such as Mastodon and WordPress.

Though the ultimate vision is seamless interaction between Threads and the open social web, this remains a work in progress. Currently, Threads users can be followed by anyone in the fediverse, engage with fediverse users’ reactions to their posts, and view replies from fediverse users. Additionally, Threads has recently enhanced its API to support third-party applications in syndicating content to the fediverse.

Despite the clear advantages of fediverse sharing, some users encounter difficulties navigating the settings to enable it. The new URL, https://www.threads.net/settings/account/fediverse, offers a quick solution. Users can now simply send this link to others, directly guiding them to the fediverse sharing settings.

While this may seem like a minor update, it reflects Meta’s engineering team’s attentiveness to the fediverse community’s efforts to educate Threads users on these new possibilities. This smoother onboarding could significantly enhance user experience and encourage broader adoption of fediverse sharing.
