Threads Now Lets You Share Posts Straight to Your Instagram Story Without Leaving the App

Threads already boasts more than 400 million monthly users, but Meta isn’t slowing down. The company is rolling out a new Threads feature designed to help the app grow even faster by tapping into Instagram’s massive audience: a smoother way to share Threads posts directly to Instagram Stories.

Meta announced the update this week, and the idea is simple: if you want to post something from Threads to your Instagram Story, you no longer have to jump between apps. Instead, Threads now lets you share a post to your Story without leaving the Threads app, including a built-in preview so you can see exactly how it will appear before you publish it. It’s a small change that removes friction, making it more likely users will actually share—and that matters when your goal is to pull new people into a social network.

Threads previously offered Story sharing, similar to resharing an Instagram post to Stories. It also already included options to share Threads posts to your Instagram Feed or send them through DMs. This new improvement focuses on speed and convenience, turning cross-posting into a more seamless, in-the-moment action—which is exactly how Stories are used.

Since launching in July 2023, Threads has leaned heavily into its connection with Instagram, and that strategy helped it explode out of the gate. Signing up required Instagram authentication, which meant new users could instantly bring over their username, bio, profile photo, verification status, and even their follower network. With a single tap, people could follow the same accounts they already followed on Instagram. And if certain accounts weren’t on Threads yet, they’d get notified that someone had added them—an extra nudge that helped drive sign-ups.

Meta didn’t stop there. Over time, it continued using its larger social platforms to keep Threads visible and growing. Popular Threads posts have been surfaced to Facebook users, and Instagram has featured its own carousel-style display of Threads content. Meta also made it easy to cross-post from Instagram and Facebook to Threads, helping content show up in multiple places at once and encouraging more people to participate.

The results show that Meta’s approach is working. Recent third-party data indicated that Threads is now seeing more daily usage than X on mobile devices, even though X still leads on the web. Threads’ growth has also been consistent and steep, doubling from 200 million monthly active users in August 2024 to 400 million monthly users by August 2025. Meta has also said Threads reached 150 million daily active users as well.

With this new Instagram Stories sharing upgrade, Meta is sending a clear message: Threads isn’t just competing in the text-first social media space—it’s using Instagram’s reach to keep expanding. For creators, brands, and everyday users who want their posts to travel farther with less effort, sharing Threads to Instagram Stories just became quicker, easier, and more likely to happen.
