Threads Experiments with User-Defined Default Feeds

Since its debut last year, Threads users have been eagerly awaiting the ability to set their “Following” feed as the default view. In an exciting development, this request is finally being addressed as Threads is now experimenting with implementing this feature.

Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, recently revealed that the platform is testing options that allow users to designate either their For You, Following, or a custom feed as their primary default. This update arrives shortly after Threads introduced custom feeds, which enable users to tailor their feeds based on particular interests or user profiles. This move steers Threads into direct competition with Bluesky, a decentralized social network renowned for its personalized algorithms and feed customization capabilities.

As Threads adapts to the evolving social media landscape, it becomes evident that Meta is accelerating updates to retain its user base. This is increasingly significant as more users from X are migrating to Bluesky, which has recently amassed over 20 million users. By rolling out these changes, Threads aims to demonstrate that it values user feedback and is committed to enhancing user experience, thereby discouraging further migrations to emerging platforms like Bluesky.

In recent developments, Threads also adjusted its app to highlight more content from followed users in the “For You” feed. While this change was welcomed by many, others expressed dissatisfaction, urging for the ability to set the Following feed as the default view. Fast forward a few days, and this request has become a reality. Zuckerberg expressed his curiosity about user interaction with this new feature, highlighting it in a recent announcement.

Initially, the new default feed setting will be available to select users as it enters the testing phase.

Although Threads commands a robust user base exceeding 275 million monthly active users, it faces heightened competition from Bluesky. Insights from a market intelligence firm suggest that Bluesky is rapidly gaining ground in terms of daily active users. If this momentum continues, Bluesky could potentially rival Threads in the near future. Threads’ proactive updates, however, might just be the key to maintaining a competitive edge in the social media arena.
