Dovetail Games has officially revealed Thomas & Friends: Wonders of Sodor, a brand-new narrative adventure that invites players to step into the world of Thomas in a way the series hasn’t offered before. Set on the Island of Sodor, the game blends nostalgic charm with fresh storytelling, letting you experience classic railway moments from the driver’s seat in an interactive, first-person perspective.
Thomas & Friends: Wonders of Sodor is currently in development for Windows PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. A release date hasn’t been announced yet, but the reveal confirms a wide launch across modern platforms.
A first-person trip through the Island of Sodor
The big hook here is immersion. Instead of watching events unfold from afar, you’ll take control directly inside the cab, traveling through familiar routes and passing well-known landmarks across Sodor. The game promises what it calls the first faithful recreation of the island in a game, built to capture the sights, sounds, and atmosphere longtime fans remember.
You’ll be able to drive multiple engines from the classic steam team, including Thomas, Percy, Gordon, Emily, and Diesel. Activities range from everyday railway duties to iconic scenarios that feel pulled straight from the stories many players grew up with.
Classic tales and new stories, fully narrated
Wonders of Sodor features a total of eight stories, mixing beloved favorites with brand-new narrative adventures inspired by the Railway Series books and the TV adaptations. Confirmed story highlights include Thomas & Gordon, Thomas & Bertie’s Great Race, and Percy’s Troublesome Day, with more included as part of the full lineup.
Narration is handled by Mark Moraghan, adding an extra layer of authenticity and storybook warmth for players who want that classic Thomas & Friends tone while they play.
More than a story mode: four ways to play
Beyond the narrative content, Thomas & Friends: Wonders of Sodor is designed to be a replayable railway sandbox with multiple modes depending on how you want to experience the island:
Stories: Character-focused adventures based on original tales and familiar themes
Mini Game: A shunting-based challenge that tests your precision and control
Timetable: A full working schedule where engines run daily tasks across the line
Free Roam: A creative mode that lets you place trains and explore with fewer limits
Whether you want a guided story experience or you’d rather experiment with routes and engines at your own pace, the game is built to accommodate both play styles.
Iconic routes, busy stations, and hidden collectibles
Exploration is a key part of the experience. You’ll visit recognizable locations such as Tidmouth Sheds, Knapford station, Gordon’s Hill, and the Windmill. You’ll also be able to run services across the North Western Main Line from Knapford to Vicarstown, then “peep peep” along Thomas’ branch line from Tidmouth to Ffarquhar.
While traveling, players can also search for hidden collectibles, encouraging you to explore corners of the island beyond the most direct routes. And if you’re not always in the mood to drive, the game also mentions the ability to ride along as a passenger for a more relaxed way to take in Sodor.
Built on Train Sim World technology
The game is powered by Train Sim World tech, combining Unreal Engine visuals with simulation systems designed to make trains feel detailed and authentic, while keeping controls accessible for families and younger players. The goal seems clear: deliver a cozy, nostalgic Thomas & Friends game that still feels like a proper railway experience.
Thomas & Friends: Wonders of Sodor is shaping up to be a fresh take on a classic franchise, mixing story-driven adventures, recognizable locations, and flexible play modes for fans who want to feel like they’re truly on the Island of Sodor.
