Tesla is setting the road on fire with its latest unveiling: the much-anticipated Model Y Juniper refresh has hit the streets of China ahead of schedule. While originally slated for a March launch, Tesla surprised fans with an early debut, rolling out deliveries at the end of February. This head-start raises hopes that U.S. buyers might soon get their hands on this stylish upgrade.
The launch commenced with a captivating promotional video showcasing the Model Y’s sleek new design, improved aerodynamics, and refreshed interior. Interestingly, while the powertrain remains unchanged, the Juniper model boasts a 5% increase in range. This mileage boost is attributed to heightened power efficiency rather than any battery expansion, maintaining the familiar charging speed of 250 kW. Tesla’s choice not to implement the cutting-edge 48V low-voltage architecture is a strategic decision aimed at keeping costs down, as explained by Lars Moravy, Tesla’s chief engineer.
However, the automotive wizardry doesn’t end with efficiency. In China, the Model Y Juniper Launch Series, which offers an extended warranty, will soon wrap up its sales by the week’s end. Meanwhile, European buyers are already seeing changes as the initial series has been phased out. Notably, the Model Y’s European sales faced a significant dip, with numbers plunging 45% in January. This downturn is partially attributed to Elon Musk’s outspoken political stances in the region. To offset the slump, European customers can now opt for the most economical Model Y Juniper RWD at a starting price of €44,990. For those looking for extended journeys, a model with an impressive 386-mile range (WLTP) is available for €49,990, although deliveries for preorders won’t begin until May.
Over in China, Tesla enthusiasts can now order the Model Y RWD version for roughly $36,310, which currently includes the Launch Series’ extra warranty until February 28. After this, it remains to be seen if prices will shift or if additional savings will be introduced.
