Tesla is set to enhance the safety features across its range of cars by rolling out a significant update to include child presence detection capabilities. This initiative, initially introduced in the updated Model Y, harnesses cabin radar technology to safeguard children accidentally left in vehicles, a scenario that tragically results in fatalities every year.
With this update, the advanced system can recognize when a child is left in a locked car and will take action accordingly. If a child is detected, the system can notify the car owner via a mobile app, activate the HVAC system to maintain a safe temperature, and even alert emergency services with the car’s location for a swift rescue.
The statistics by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) highlight the urgency of this feature, with an alarming average of 37 children falling victim to heat strokes annually in the U.S. due to being forgotten in cars.
In addition to the Model Y, Tesla plans to expand this potentially life-saving feature to other models, including various versions of the Model 3 and the eagerly anticipated Cybertruck, provided they are equipped with the necessary hardware.
Besides preventing heat-related tragedies, the cabin radar technology will aid in optimizing airbag deployment by classifying passengers based on their size, thereby increasing passenger safety during accidents.
