Tesla Enhances Cold Weather Charging for Model Y with New LFP Battery Heating Technology

Tesla is stepping up its game this winter with a new feature designed to significantly enhance the charging speed of its standard range Model 3 and Model Y vehicles equipped with LFP batteries. These batteries, although popular for their safety and durability, do face challenges in cold weather, often charging slower than their NCA counterparts.

In response to this, Tesla is rolling out an innovative battery heating option at its V3 and V4 Supercharger stations. This feature is set to boost the charging speed up to four times faster than before in chilly conditions. Unlike the usual preconditioning routine, this option allows the Supercharger to send ripple AC current directly through the battery cells, warming them up more efficiently.

Tesla’s engineering prowess is highlighted in this development, with Max de Zegher of Tesla hinting that such improvements might remain unique to vehicles utilizing CATL’s LFP batteries. This strategic move aims to address the well-known limitations of LFP cells in cold climates, as previously explained by Elon Musk.

Musk candidly pointed out that while LFP batteries do suffer more in freezing weather compared to NCA batteries—both in charging speed and range—the new heating option is a game changer. It promises to cut down the extra time spent at Superchargers during winter road trips without the need for any major modifications to the battery itself.

Even though CATL, Tesla’s LFP battery supplier, has newer LFP cells that perform better in cold weather, Tesla’s current models in the US remain equipped with the existing generation. This might be partly due to the regulatory landscape, as these models do not qualify for federal tax incentives aimed at incentivizing electric vehicle adoption.

This enhancement by Tesla is a sign of the company’s commitment to overcoming the cold-weather challenges faced by electric vehicles and pushing the boundaries of technology-driven solutions. As we edge closer to a world dominated by electrified transportation, such innovations ensure that Tesla remains at the forefront of the EV revolution.
