In a nostalgic nod to an earlier era of smartphone design, manufacturers are once again vying for the title of the thinnest handset. Samsung’s anticipated Galaxy S25 Edge and Apple’s rumored iPhone 17 Air are set to continue this trend in the coming months. Joining this ultra-slim race is TECNO, with an ambition not only to create what it claims will be the industry’s slimmest smartphone but also to integrate a sizeable battery in its latest SPARK Slim concept.
Often, the pursuit of slender designs results in smaller batteries, leading to reduced device longevity and potential overheating issues. TECNO seeks to tackle at least some of these challenges. The SPARK Slim is set to debut at the MWC 2025 trade show on March 3, dazzling with its mere 5.75mm thickness.
This sleek profile makes the Galaxy S25 Edge look bulky in comparison, at 5.84mm. TECNO has managed to fit an impressive 5,200mAh battery into the SPARK Slim, surpassing the capacity of the battery in Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S25 Ultra. Along with this power-packed battery, the phone boasts dual 50MP rear cameras and a vibrant 6.78-inch AMOLED display with curved edges, offering a 1224p resolution and an exceptional 144Hz refresh rate. With a peak brightness of 4,500 units, the phone also features a 13MP front camera.
Admittedly, the slimness does come with a pronounced camera bump, a common trait consumers may have to accept for the wow factor of the overall design. The battery itself, a mere 4.04mm thick, supports fast charging up to 45W. Although TECNO hasn’t detailed the battery variant, there is strong speculation that it utilizes silicon-carbon technology, enhancing capacity without adding thickness.
While the chipset powering the SPARK Slim remains a mystery, and TECNO has yet to announce plans for mass production, there is uncertainty whether the SPARK Slim’s debut will lead to commercial availability. In the past, TECNO’s Phantom Ultimate 2 tri-fold smartphone dazzled audiences but stopped short of hitting store shelves. The same fate may befall the SPARK Slim, serving as a showcase piece to attract attention rather than a retail product. However, there is hope that TECNO will take the leap and bring this innovative concept to the market, marking a new chapter in the pursuit of innovative smartphone design.
