A major display manufacturer in China is reportedly getting ready to push dual-mode gaming monitors to a new extreme. TCL CSOT is said to be working on a next-generation dual-mode monitor that doesn’t just double its refresh rate when switching modes, but quadruples it.
According to the report, this upcoming TCL CSOT dual-mode monitor would support 4X refresh rate switching, moving from 160 Hz up to a staggering 640 Hz. That’s a significant leap compared to the more common dual-mode designs on the market today, where a high-resolution mode might run at 160 Hz and then switch to a lower-resolution mode topping out around 320 Hz. With TCL CSOT’s approach, the performance-focused mode could deliver a much bigger jump in smoothness and motion clarity.
While final specs haven’t been confirmed, the monitor is expected to pair a high-resolution mode with a high refresh rate—likely around 4K at 160 Hz—then switch to a competitive-focused mode that prioritizes speed, potentially 1080p at 640 Hz. If this configuration becomes reality, it would be aimed directly at esports and high-FPS gaming where ultra-high refresh rates can reduce perceived blur and improve responsiveness.
TCL CSOT wouldn’t be alone in chasing this trend. Other brands have already teased similar “multi-mode” or advanced dual-mode monitors, including models that combine a fast 4K mode with an even faster Full HD mode reaching the upper hundreds of hertz. There are also existing gaming monitors that advertise 3X and even 4X refresh rate switching, showing that manufacturers are actively experimenting with displays that can adapt to different play styles—high-resolution visual fidelity for cinematic games, then maximum refresh rate for competitive titles.
For now, details like pricing, release timing, and full specifications remain unknown. Even the panel technology hasn’t been clarified. TCL CSOT manufactures a range of display types, so the monitor could arrive with either IPS or OLED. OLED would be especially interesting for gamers thanks to its near-instant pixel response and contrast advantages, but IPS is still a common choice for high-refresh gaming monitors due to maturity, cost, and broad availability.
If TCL CSOT follows through with a 160 Hz to 640 Hz dual-mode monitor, it could become one of the most talked-about high refresh rate gaming displays to watch—especially for players who want a single monitor that can switch between sharp 4K gaming and ultra-fast esports performance.
