Steam’s Next Action-RPG Phenomenon Nears $20M Before Launch

Phantom Blade Zero Pre-Orders Signal a Massive Launch for the Kungfu Punk Action RPG

Phantom Blade Zero is quickly becoming one of the most talked-about action RPGs of the year, and fresh pre-order estimates suggest S-Game may have a major hit on its hands before the game even launches.

Set to release on October 28, Phantom Blade Zero has drawn strong attention from fans of fast-paced martial arts combat, dark fantasy worlds, and cinematic action gameplay. Described as a “kungfu punk” wuxia action RPG, the game blends traditional Chinese martial arts themes with a stylish, gritty, and modern visual identity that helps it stand out in an increasingly crowded genre.

According to recent market data, Phantom Blade Zero has already generated close to $20 million from Steam pre-orders alone. The game is estimated to have around 386,000 pre-orders on the platform, bringing in approximately $18.5 million ahead of release. For a new action RPG launching from a Chinese studio, that is an impressive start and a strong indicator of player confidence.

Even more notable is the game’s wishlist performance. Phantom Blade Zero currently has around 2.4 million wishlists on Steam, suggesting a large pool of interested players waiting for launch impressions, reviews, or final gameplay details before making a purchase. With a wishlist-to-pre-order conversion rate of roughly 16%, the game is already performing at a level similar to other major action releases.

One comparison being made is with Crimson Desert, another high-profile action title that built major momentum before release. That game reportedly had around 363,000 Steam pre-orders from 2.2 million wishlists shortly before launch, putting it in nearly the same range as Phantom Blade Zero. Crimson Desert later went on to sell more than six million copies within three months, showing how powerful strong early interest can be when paired with positive reception.

If Phantom Blade Zero follows a similar path, it could become one of the biggest action RPG launches of the year. However, there is also reason to believe it may have an even larger ceiling, especially because of its strong appeal in the Chinese market. Games rooted in Chinese mythology, martial arts, and historical fantasy have proven they can find massive global audiences when executed well.

Naturally, many players are drawing comparisons between Phantom Blade Zero and Black Myth: Wukong. Both games come from Chinese developers, both lean into Chinese cultural inspiration, and both focus heavily on high-impact action combat. Black Myth: Wukong became a global phenomenon, selling more than 30 million copies worldwide and proving that Chinese-made action games can compete at the highest level internationally.

That said, Phantom Blade Zero faces a different challenge. Black Myth: Wukong benefited from the enormous cultural recognition of Journey to the West, one of the most famous stories in Chinese literature. Phantom Blade Zero does not have the same built-in mythological foundation, which may make it harder to reach those extraordinary sales figures. Still, its unique “kungfu punk” style, sharp combat direction, and strong pre-launch numbers suggest it could become a breakout success in its own right.

For S-Game, the signs are extremely promising. With hundreds of thousands of pre-orders, millions of wishlists, and growing anticipation from action RPG fans around the world, Phantom Blade Zero appears positioned for a powerful debut. If the final game delivers on its stylish trailers and gameplay promises, it could become one of the standout releases of the year and a major new name in the global action RPG scene.
