Steam Deck enthusiasts eager to embark on the thrilling adventures of Monster Hunter Wilds may find themselves facing unexpected challenges. Despite the allure of handheld gaming, the game’s performance on the Steam Deck has proven to be disappointing—more so than on a desktop PC. For now, these mobile hunters are left hoping for eventual patches to enhance their experience.
During the open beta of Monster Hunter Wilds, players expressed concerns about the game’s performance on the Steam Deck. Capcom assured fans of improvements; however, with the game’s full release, users are encountering persistent issues like pixelated graphics and choppy frame rates. Although Monster Hunter Wilds isn’t officially marked as Steam Deck compatible on its Steam page, plenty of other unmarked games run fairly well on the handheld device. This discrepancy makes it all the more frustrating when typical tweaks fail to improve the game’s functionality.
Many gamers have uploaded benchmarking videos showcasing the difficulty of achieving a steady 30fps, even with features like upscaling or FSR activated. On the bright side, this upscaling doesn’t impair latency, which is critical when trying to conquer massive beasts. Lowering graphics settings can mitigate some performance issues, but the core experience remains subpar on the Steam Deck. Alternatives like the Asus ROG Ally and MSI Claw 8 AI+, equipped with greater raw power, have shown slightly better results, but mobile gamers should manage their expectations; even mid-tier Nvidia and AMD desktop GPUs struggle with this game.
Digital Foundry’s recent analysis didn’t paint a much brighter picture, highlighting the framerate struggles and not-so-stellar graphics quality. Users seeking a mobile gaming solution may consider cloud gaming as an alternative. However, GeForce Now, often a go-to for such scenarios, is not currently an option for Monster Hunter Wilds; support is also lacking from Xbox Cloud gaming services.
Although Monster Hunter Wilds is not the most optimized title for the Steam Deck just yet, it does run, and gamers report that the controls function smoothly. Should Capcom continue to refine and optimize the game, portable PC users can look forward to improved performance trickling down to enhance their hunting escapades.
