Square Enix Alters Iconic Dragon Quest Designs

Great news for Dragon Quest fans—Square Enix is gearing up to launch Dragon Quest III HD-2D! However, the developer has opted to tweak some of the character designs, catching the attention of fans and sparking some discussions.

Prominent changes include modifications to the female Warrior and the Priest. The female Warrior now sports armor that offers more coverage, particularly around her thighs. Meanwhile, the Priest’s cross has been swapped for a trident, which might be a move to steer clear of religious symbols, unless one counts Poseidon’s mythology.

Some fans argue that these changes were made to cater to “western audiences.” However, it’s more likely that the adjustments were implemented to comply with Japan’s strict CERO rating board, which has been tightening regulations in recent years. A Japanese user even noticed that the female Jester/Gadabout’s design has been altered, with her bodysuit covering more of her legs than before.

The Dragon Quest series is cherished not just for its gameplay but also for its iconic characters, designed by the legendary Akira Toriyama, who sadly passed away earlier this year.

For those eagerly awaiting more Dragon Quest adventures, mark your calendars: Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake is set to release on November 14. The game will be available on multiple platforms, including Windows PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, PS4, and PS5.

This buzz around Dragon Quest III HD-2D not only highlights the love for the series but also serves as a reminder of how classic games continue to evolve. Whether you’re a long-time fan or new to the franchise, there’s a lot to look forward to as these iconic titles get a fresh, modern update.
