Sponge Break Announced as a Chaotic Co-Op Rafting Adventure for PC
Publisher Balor Games and developer Goose Byte have revealed Sponge Break, a wild new co-op rafting adventure that turns an ordinary kitchen sponge into an unlikely escape artist. The game is currently in development for Windows PC via Steam, with a release date yet to be announced. Players interested in trying it early can now sign up for a playtest.
Sponge Break is built around chaotic 1 to 4-player co-op, physics-driven rafting, and a ridiculous sense of humor. The premise is simple but instantly memorable: you are a sponge trying to escape the tyranny of the kitchen sink. Unfortunately, your only way out is a fragile raft that looks like it could fall apart at any moment, and the river ahead is packed with hazards, puzzles, enemies, and plenty of opportunities for disaster.
The game supports both solo play and drop-in co-op, allowing friends to join the adventure whenever they are ready. Whether they arrive on time or show up late just to make everything worse, Sponge Break is designed to embrace the unpredictable energy of multiplayer chaos.
One of the standout features is proximity voice chat, complete with sponge characters that lip-sync to players’ voices. That means every panicked warning, poorly timed joke, or desperate scream can play out in real time as the raft barrels through dangerous rapids. Teamwork is encouraged, but based on the game’s design, failure may be just as entertaining as success.
Physics play a major role in Sponge Break. Steering the raft incorrectly can send the whole crew flipping into trouble, scattering valuable gear and damaging the raft. Take too many hits, and your makeshift escape vessel may start falling apart beneath you. Every mistake matters, and every river run has the potential to become a hilarious disaster.
Players will also have access to a plunger-hook, a tool that works like a grappling hook and can grab objects that are not bolted down. It can be used to collect loot, interact with the environment, and possibly cause even more chaos when placed in the wrong hands. The raft also includes a shared stash, giving the team a place to store supplies before they inevitably lose them in a crash.
Sponge Break is not just about surviving rapids. Players will need to solve puzzles, open new pathways, dodge environmental dangers, avoid catching fire, and even battle beavers. The journey will take sponge crews through multiple biomes, including sewers, rivers, abandoned facilities, and other hazardous locations. Between levels, players can stop at safehouses to repair, revive teammates, restock supplies, and prepare for the next leg of the escape.
Customization is another major part of the experience. Sponge Break will include more than 100 unlockable cosmetic options, letting players personalize their sponge with different eyes, eyebrows, mouths, hats, inflatable buoys, plungers, and emotes. Whether celebrating a perfect run or blaming the teammate who ruined everything, the game gives players plenty of ways to express themselves.
With its mix of co-op gameplay, slapstick physics, survival rafting, proximity voice chat, and absurd comedy, Sponge Break looks like a promising multiplayer adventure for fans of chaotic party games. No official launch date has been confirmed yet, but the game is planned for Windows PC on Steam, and playtest registration is now available.
