Sony’s next premium phone, the Xperia 1 VIII, is starting to take shape thanks to newly leaked renders and a fresh wave of rumors. If the information pans out, Sony could be preparing one of its biggest flagship design changes in years, with a launch expected as soon as May.
The most talked-about change is the camera layout. Since the first Xperia 1 arrived in 2019, Sony has leaned on a tall, narrow vertical camera strip that helped the lineup stand out instantly. The leaked Xperia 1 VIII images suggest that look may be on its way out, replaced by a larger, more modern square-style camera module. It’s a move that brings the phone closer to the mainstream flagship aesthetic, and early reactions have been mixed—some people like the updated look, while others feel it loses part of what made Xperia devices feel uniquely “Sony.”
While the outside may look different, the bigger story could be what happens inside the camera system. The Xperia 1 VIII is rumored to feature a triple 48MP camera setup. That would be a meaningful upgrade, particularly for zoom photography. The previous Xperia 1 VII reportedly brought a 48MP Exmor T sensor to the main and ultra-wide cameras, but continued to use a lower-resolution 12MP sensor for its continuous zoom telephoto. If Sony really moves the telephoto to 48MP, it would finally give zoom shots the same high-resolution treatment as the other lenses—something enthusiasts have been asking for in a true “pro” camera phone.
Despite the potential redesign, Sony is also rumored to keep two features that many brands have dropped: a microSD card slot and a 3.5mm headphone jack. For Xperia loyalists, these aren’t just nostalgic extras—they’re practical tools for flexible storage, easy file management, and reliable wired audio without adapters.
