Fresh CAD-based renders of the Sony Xperia 1 VIII have surfaced, giving fans the clearest early look yet at Sony’s 2026 flagship phone and the expected successor to the Xperia 1 VII. After months of speculation, the leak appears to settle two big debates at once: Sony isn’t adopting a punch-hole selfie camera, but it is finally changing the rear camera design that’s defined the Xperia 1 series for years.
On the front, Sony is sticking to what makes its phones instantly recognizable. The Xperia 1 VIII is shown with a 6.5-inch flat display and symmetrical bezels at the top and bottom. Those slim bezels reportedly continue to house the front-facing camera and dual stereo speakers, keeping the screen free of cutouts and interruptions. For longtime Xperia users who prefer a clean display with no notch or punch-hole, this is likely the best possible news.
The bigger surprise is on the back. The Xperia 1 VIII is said to ditch Sony’s signature vertical camera strip design, a look the brand has leaned on since the first Xperia 1. In its place is a square-style camera island that groups the three rear cameras together. It’s a notable shift in identity and easily the most visible exterior redesign the Xperia 1 line has seen in years, which will probably split opinions among fans who loved the older strip layout.
The leaked dimensions also suggest subtle but meaningful changes to the chassis. The Xperia 1 VIII is listed at 161.9 mm tall (slightly shorter than the previous model), 74.4 mm wide (a bit wider), and 8.58 mm thick, up from around 8.2 mm. With the camera bump included, total thickness is said to reach 11.37 mm. That extra thickness could point to upgraded camera hardware, a larger battery, or both—exactly the sort of practical improvement many users would accept in exchange for a slightly chunkier profile.
Camera rumors tied to these renders are already heating up, with talk of a triple 48MP rear camera system. If that upgrade is real, the larger camera island and thicker build would make sense, especially if Sony is aiming for more ambitious imaging hardware in 2026.
Other details shown in the leak include a side-mounted fingerprint reader, continuing Sony’s familiar approach to biometrics and keeping the display free for content.
If Sony follows its typical release pattern, the Xperia 1 VIII could be announced around May 2026, with a wider release expected in June 2026.
The big question now is whether Xperia fans will embrace the new square camera island or miss the iconic camera strip that helped Sony’s flagship stand out for so long. Either way, the Xperia 1 VIII is shaping up to be a phone that doubles down on Sony’s clean, uninterrupted screen experience while making a bold statement with a redesigned rear camera module.
