Sony has unveiled the PXW-Z300 camcorder, a cutting-edge offering for news reporters and documentary filmmakers. Scheduled for release in Fall 2025, this 4K 60P XDCAM camcorder is packed with features that cater to professional demands.
Boasting a 17x optical zoom, the PXW-Z300 covers a focal range from 30.3 mm to 515 mm. With a 1.5x digital zoom available in 4K mode, this extends up to 772.5 mm. The camera’s f/1.9 lens features an electronic variable ND filter, adjustable between 1/4 and 1/128 ND, ensuring flexibility even under bright conditions. The advanced prism system splits light across triple 1/2-inch 4K Exmor R CMOS sensors, reducing aliasing seen in single-chip systems.
Enhancing its utility, the camcorder employs AI for human subject tracking, managing focus automatically while adjusting composition and exposure. Alternatively, operators can manually control focus, zoom, and iris via the three rings on the lens. With numerous buttons and dials, users can easily access various camera settings. The camcorder also includes a versatile 3.5-inch 2.76M-pixel display on a flexible LCD arm for convenient monitoring.
The PXW-Z300 is powered by the BIONZ XR processor, offering a range of output resolutions up to 4K 60P and supporting multiple codecs, including MPEG HD422, XAVC Intra, XAVC Long, and MP4 proxies. Storage options include CFexpress Type A or SDXC UHS-II/UHS-I cards, with dual card slots available for redundancy. The device seamlessly integrates with cloud and FTP storage solutions and supports real-time streaming via RTMP/RTMPS and SRT protocols over wired and wireless networks.
Audio captures up to four channels via XLR inputs and a Multi Interface Shoe. For power, it supports BP-U35, BP-U70, and BP-U100 batteries, or any 100-watt USB-C PD power source. Additionally, the camcorder features a V-Mount for accessory attachment.
While the price remains undisclosed, it’s noted that the previous model, the PXW-Z280, was priced at $10,200, hinting at a premium bracket for the PXW-Z300. For those seeking more budget-friendly alternatives, the PXW-Z90V might be worth considering.
