Sony Refreshes GTA 6 Pre-Order Ad After Disc-Free PS5 Confusion

GTA 6 Physical Pre-Orders Spark Confusion as PS5 Ad Returns With Digital Console

Grand Theft Auto 6 is already one of the most anticipated game launches in history, but its physical pre-order rollout has created an unexpected controversy. Many fans were surprised to learn that physical pre-orders for GTA 6’s Standard and Ultimate editions do not appear to include an actual game disc. Instead, buyers are getting a code in the box, a decision that has frustrated collectors and players who still prefer traditional physical media.

The confusion grew after PlayStation promoted GTA 6 across its social media channels with an ad highlighting the game’s release date and the familiar claim that it “plays best on PS5.” However, the posts were later removed, leading fans to speculate about why Sony had pulled the campaign.

Some players wondered whether Rockstar Games or Take-Two Interactive had reconsidered the wording, especially since the slogan could be seen as discouraging Xbox owners or future PC players. Others believed the issue may have been tied to the physical edition itself, since the original promotion appeared alongside a standard PS5 console with a disc drive.

The ad has since returned, but with a noticeable change: it now features the PS5 Digital Edition instead. That switch has fueled further discussion, as it lines up more closely with the code-in-the-box format being offered for GTA 6 pre-orders.

For a game as massive as GTA 6, even a small marketing mix-up can attract major attention. It is possible that Sony and other partners were working with limited information to prevent leaks before Rockstar’s official announcements. Still, the situation has left some fans questioning how a physical release for one of the biggest games of the decade can arrive without a disc.

The controversy comes at a time when Sony’s platform appears to be playing a major role in GTA 6’s marketing push. Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick previously referenced a marketing agreement connected to the game, and GTA 6’s second trailer was captured on the base PS5. Rumors have also suggested that a GTA 6 PS5 bundle or PS5 Pro bundle could be announced closer to launch.

If the PlayStation version offers performance advantages, such as a smoother frame rate or enhanced visuals, that could further strengthen the appeal of buying GTA 6 on PS5. A potential 60 fps mode, faster loading, or improved graphics would likely be a major selling point for players deciding which version to purchase.

However, performance benefits may not be enough to calm the backlash from physical game collectors. With prices reportedly set around $80 for the Standard Edition and $100 for the Ultimate Edition, many buyers expected a premium physical product. For them, receiving only a download code inside a box feels disappointing, especially for a franchise with such a long history of collectible physical releases.

The lack of a disc also raises practical concerns. Players who buy digital codes cannot easily resell, trade, lend, or preserve their copy in the same way they could with a traditional disc. For a game that is expected to launch as a major single-player experience before expanding further online, that limitation matters to a large part of the gaming audience.

GTA 6 is still expected to dominate sales when it arrives, but the code-in-the-box decision shows how sensitive players remain about the shift away from physical media. Rockstar’s next blockbuster may be built for the digital era, but many fans still want something tangible to put on their shelf.
