Sony’s latest virtual reality offering, the PlayStation VR2 (PS VR2), has been exclusive to the PlayStation 5 (PS5) console, functioning solely with VR-supported titles on the platform. In a significant development, Sony has begun exploring the headset’s potential use with PCs, aiming to broaden its versatility and user base.
As part of this initiative, Sony is conducting tests to enable the PS VR2 to interface seamlessly with Windows computers, providing users with the opportunity to engage with a wider range of games available on PC. The extent of compatibility, whether it will support all PC games or a curated selection, remains under wraps. Sony has expressed intentions to implement this cross-platform functionality within the current year.
In a statement, the company expressed, “We’re pleased to share that we are currently testing the ability for PS VR2 players to access additional games on PC to offer even more game variety in addition to the PS VR2 titles available through PS5. We hope to make this support available in 2024, so stay tuned for more updates.”
The prospect of PS VR2’s PC compatibility has long intrigued the modder community, which has undertaken various attempts to connect the headset with PC systems, including efforts to reverse-engineer the device. Despite their endeavors, success has eluded them until now, with Sony stepping up to officially enable this functionality.
The potential for PS VR2’s use on PC platforms is anticipated to enhance its appeal and possibly give a boost to its sales. In another move to enhance the PlayStation ecosystem, Sony has introduced passkey support for increased security. Additionally, there are speculations about a new PlayStation 5 Pro console launch, expected to precede the release of the much-anticipated game, GTA 6.
