Sony Introduces FavoriteSpace™ VR World for Sports Enthusiasts

Sony Group Corporation has unveiled an innovative service named FavoriteSpace™, which is set to revitalize the way sports fans engage with their beloved teams and each other. With this launch, Sony harnesses its prowess in technology and entertainment to offer sports enthusiasts a unique venue to indulge in their favorite sports content and socialize with like-minded fans.

The newly introduced FavoriteSpace smartphone application is the cornerstone of this initiative. The app’s initial feature is a virtual “area” where fans can immerse themselves in everything related to Manchester City Football Club. This first venture serves as a digital space where users can interact and consume content dedicated to the club.

FavoriteSpace is designed to foster a sense of community among fans who share a common allegiance, allowing for interactions not only with each other but also with the teams and players they support. Sony’s goal with this platform is to enhance the fans’ experience in both physical and digital realms, thereby increasing fan engagement and cultivating a broader fan base.

This engagement-rich app facilitates fans in navigating through various virtual spaces that reflect the essence and history of their chosen sports teams. By using avatars, fans can dive deep into team-specific content and connect with fellow supporters. The app taps into advanced technologies, including the tracking system developed by Hawk-Eye Innovations, a member of the Sony Group, to deliver immersive 3DCG content for a lifelike virtual experience.

During the launch phase of the Manchester City Area, Sony’s partnership with the club as the official Virtual Fan Engagement Partner, which began in 2021, played a pivotal role. The collaboration focused on a proof of concept to refine the virtual space based on fan feedback, ensuring a tailored and engaging experience.

The FavoriteSpace app is initially being rolled out as a trial version featuring free functions, with a full version set to include premium features anticipated to launch in October. Currently, the app is accessible in Japan, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

The Manchester City Area in the FavoriteSpace App offers several key experiences:
1. A groundbreaking dimension to sports fandom, the app enables fans to virtually visit a replica of the Etihad Stadium whenever they wish, navigating the space with a personal avatar. It introduces features like “Immersive Highlights,” granting fans the liberty to view past home game highlights from any perspective in captivating 3DCG.

2. The virtual space is designed to unite fans, players, and the team by eliminating barriers of nationality and language. Communication is facilitated through the use of emoticons and interactive gestures, such as joining avatars together in camaraderie. Events synchronized with live matches, avatar customization with team apparel, and the creation of fan banners are among the avenues for fans to show their support. These interactions can also lead to direct engagement with players and the team, strengthening the bond within the community.

The FavoriteSpace app connects to both android and iOS systems, providing a platform for fans to come together.
