2K and Firaxis Games are rolling out a major new update for Sid Meier’s Civilization VII, and it’s one longtime fans have been asking for: the ability to stick with a single civilization for an entire playthrough. Called the “Test of Time” update, it arrives as a free download for all players on May 19 and also introduces sweeping changes to how victories work, along with a brand-new progression system designed to keep every campaign feeling fresh.
The headline feature is Time-Tested Civs, which opens up far more freedom in how you shape your empire across the game’s Ages. You’ll be able to start a new game with any civilization from any Age, and when it’s time to transition into the next Age, you can choose what happens next: switch to a new civilization for a different strategic direction, or keep playing as the same one and carry your identity forward. The AI will mirror your approach too, meaning opponents will either remain consistent with one civ throughout the match or evolve alongside you in a similar way.
The update also delivers a fully reworked victories system, putting win conditions at the center of the experience from the very beginning. Instead of waiting for the late game to see how things shake out, Civilization VII will now push players to establish clear, undeniable dominance in one of four victory categories: Military, Economy, Culture, or Science. Progress toward any of these paths can begin as early as the Antiquity Age, and if your strategy is strong enough, you may even be able to secure a win by the Exploration Age. The goal is to make every decision feel more meaningful earlier, while rewarding focused planning and smart execution.
Another big change is the removal of Legacy Paths. In their place comes a new system called Triumphs, created in response to player feedback and aimed at adding variety and challenge without forcing a single “correct” route. Triumphs are optional objectives that can shape how each match unfolds, offering a mix of goals that encourage experimentation and replayability. They’re tied to the game’s six Attributes: Militaristic, Cultural, Scientific, Economic, Diplomatic, and Expansionist, giving you multiple ways to pursue a distinctive empire-building story each time you play.
Sid Meier’s Civilization VII is available now on Windows PC (Steam), Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PS4, and PS5. The Test of Time update launches May 19 for free, bringing a more flexible civilization system, a sharper and faster-moving victory structure, and new Triumph challenges to keep every campaign engaging from the opening turns onward.
