The NVIDIA RTX 4090: A Pricey Proposition in Germany
The NVIDIA RTX 4090, once celebrated for its initial price cuts, has seen a significant spike in costs within the competitive German market, leaving gamers and tech enthusiasts in a quandary. It wasn’t long ago that this flagship Ada Lovelace model enjoyed retail price reductions. The GPU initially hit the market with a price tag of €1,949 in Germany, which then fell to €1,859 and eventually to €1,769 between February and May of the following year. These figures were for the official Founders Edition through NVIDIA’s website, regarded as the Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP). Custom variants occasionally dipped €100 lower.
However, those days of relative affordability seem to be a distant memory. With NVIDIA gearing up for the potential announcement of the RTX 50 series by the end of this year or early 2025, retailers have begun adjusting their pricing strategies. Consequently, finding an RTX 4090 at a bargain price has become increasingly difficult.
Recent reports indicate a stark rise in RTX 4090 prices. According to data compiled by 3DCenter, which analyzed prices across three major German retailers, the current market scenario is grim for consumers. At the moment, only Alternate offers the card for €1,959, while others have escalated their pricing to a minimum of €2,304, with some going as high as €2,668. This price shift represents a significant increase—equivalent to the cost of an entire gaming PC compared to 2023 prices.
The 3DCenter report also highlighted that while the RTX 4090 was largely available and even oversupplied at various points, much of this inventory was snapped up by companies and individuals looking for affordable compute GPUs for activities like generative AI and language model training. Despite its two-year lifespan, the RTX 4090 has rarely been found below its MSRP.
With the elevated prices, some gamers might consider selling their RTX 4090 to prepare for an upgrade to the anticipated RTX 5090. However, there’s a lot of uncertainty surrounding the RTX 5090’s release date and its eventual pricing. For now, consumers looking to get their hands on the powerful RTX 4090 might have to brace themselves for shelling out more than they had originally anticipated.
