Tracking technologies have come a long way, and in a bold move to enhance product recovery services, the company Tile is innovating the market with a satellite-powered finding feature to compete with Apple’s AirTag. This development is geared towards providing users the ability to track items in remote areas where traditional Bluetooth connectivity fails to reach.
Tile, previously recognized as a trailblazer in the tracker industry, had lost ground to Apple’s AirTag, which quickly captured a significant share of the market upon its release. Trackers now predominantly depend on Apple’s “Find My” or Google’s “Find My Device” networks, making it challenging for companies to stand out with unique features. While some, like Samsung, have tried to differentiate their trackers with integrated applications, Tile’s parent company, Life360, is adopting an entirely different strategy.
Life360’s new approach is to employ satellites to expand the tracking capabilities of its devices. Highlighting the limitations of competitors like Apple AirTags that require proximity to a compatible device for location tracking, Tile aims to address a gap in the industry by offering a tracker that can be located globally, without the need for Bluetooth proximity.
The innovative “Bluetooth to Satellite” technology will link Tile-compatible devices to the Hubble satellite network, enabling users to find their trackers anywhere in the world. The technology promises a seamless transition between efficient, local Bluetooth tracking to robust satellite tracking capable of spanning remote locations where cellular networks may not penetrate.
The first of these advanced Tile trackers, including upgraded versions of Tile Slim and Tile Pro, are expected to launch in 2025. These will be the pioneers in a network that plans to deploy a total of 96 satellites by 2028, with subsequent access extended to third-party providers.
This avant-garde tracking option will not only mitigate the limitations of current Bluetooth-dependent trackers but also open up new possibilities for tracking in diverse scenarios—from preventing theft to finding lost pets, or keeping tabs on personal items in off-the-grid locations.
With this ambitious project, Life360 is set to reposition Tile as a formidable contender in the tracker industry and redefine the standards for global location technologies. Users looking forward to a future-proof solution for item tracking will be keenly watching the development and rollout of these satellite-enabled devices.
