SanDisk’s First 8TB SDUC Cards Could Redefine Portable Storage
SanDisk appears to be preparing a major leap in removable storage, with new SD and microSD cards reaching capacities of up to 8TB expected to arrive soon. While the company did not make a major public appearance at the recent technology trade show, its upcoming products were still spotted through SD Association materials, where new high-capacity SDUC cards were displayed.
The standout model is an 8TB SDUC card, a capacity that would mark a significant milestone for photographers, video creators, drone users, handheld gaming fans, and anyone who needs massive storage in a compact format. Alongside the full-size SDUC card, SanDisk is also expected to introduce a microSDUC version, likely topping out at 4TB.
This is not the first time SanDisk has discussed ultra-high-capacity SDUC storage. The company previously announced an SDUC card in 2024 with plans for a later release, but that product never reached the market. Now, it looks like SanDisk may skip ahead and launch with even larger capacities than originally expected.
The new lineup is expected to include models under both the SanDisk Ultra and SanDisk Extreme Pro series. The Ultra series should include both standard SDUC and microSDUC cards, with the full-size SDUC version reportedly reaching up to 8TB. The microSDUC model is expected to arrive in a 4TB capacity.
For users who need higher performance, the Extreme Pro series is also expected to receive a 4TB SDUC card. Full technical specifications have not yet been confirmed, so details such as exact read and write speeds remain unclear. However, the Extreme Pro branding suggests that this version will target demanding workloads such as high-resolution photography, 4K or 8K video recording, and fast file transfers.
One important detail is compatibility. SDUC cards require new card readers, and current readers may not be enough. Even some newer SD Express card readers are not expected to support SDUC cards. That means buyers interested in these large-capacity cards will likely need updated hardware before they can use them properly.
This compatibility issue comes from the way SD card standards have evolved. UHS-II, SDUC, and SD Express have not always worked together in a simple, universal way. The good news is that new card readers supporting all three standards in one device are expected to appear, which should make the transition easier for users who work with multiple card types.
At the moment, SanDisk has not confirmed pricing or a firm release date. The company has also not provided detailed public comments about the new cards or the availability of updated SD Express-compatible readers. Still, multiple industry sources at the SD Association booth reportedly indicated that these products are on the way soon.
If the launch happens as expected, SanDisk’s 8TB SDUC card could become one of the most important removable storage releases in years. For content creators and professionals, it could reduce the need to swap cards during long shoots. For everyday users, it could make compact storage devices more useful than ever before.
The arrival of 4TB microSDUC and 8TB SDUC cards would also push the broader storage market forward. As cameras, smartphones, drones, gaming handhelds, and portable workstations continue to generate larger files, demand for high-capacity removable storage is only increasing.
For now, the biggest questions are price, speed, and reader support. But if SanDisk can deliver these cards soon with reliable performance, the SDUC era may finally begin in a meaningful way.
