Samsung’s Unexpectedly Awkward Clapback to Apple’s iPhone Fold Rumors

Samsung’s answer to Apple’s upcoming foldable iPhone is starting to take real shape. Fresh CAD-based renders have revealed the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide, a new foldable model that trades the tall, narrow book-style design for a shorter, wider body that looks closer to a passport-like form factor.

The latest renders suggest Samsung is preparing to launch the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide this summer, arriving alongside the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8. And while both devices sit in the same premium foldable family, their sizes and proportions appear dramatically different—enough to change how the phone feels in the hand and how the screens work in everyday use.

According to the dimensions shown in the CAD renders, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide measures 123.9 x 161.4 x 4.9mm when unfolded, and 123.9 x 82.2 x 9.8mm when folded. That’s a noticeably squat profile compared to the expected Galaxy Z Fold 8, which is listed at 158.4 x 143.2 x 4.5mm unfolded and 158.4 x 72.8 x 9mm folded.

Put simply, the Fold 8 Wide is expected to be shorter and thicker, while the standard Fold 8 remains significantly taller and slimmer. In fact, based on these figures, the regular Fold 8 would be about 34mm taller than the Wide model—an enormous difference that could make the Fold 8 Wide feel more compact, more “pocketable” in height, and potentially more comfortable for one-handed use when closed.

Screen sizes also underline the intent behind this design. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide is said to feature a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch internal foldable screen. That combination hints at a device designed to feel broader and more natural for typing and viewing, while still delivering the large inner display foldable fans expect.

One of the biggest surprises from the renders is the camera approach. Instead of a larger multi-sensor array, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide is expected to come with a dual camera setup, suggesting Samsung may be prioritizing design goals, weight balance, or internal space for battery and cooling rather than making this model camera-heavy.

On the inside, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide is expected to run on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, positioning it as a top-tier performance foldable built for demanding apps, multitasking, and next-generation AI features. Powering everything should be a 5,000mAh battery, with support for 45W wired charging—specs that will likely appeal to users who want a larger battery in a foldable without sacrificing charging speed.

Another detail that will catch the attention of foldable skeptics: the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide is expected to feature a noticeably reduced crease on the internal display, similar to what’s anticipated for the standard Fold 8. If Samsung succeeds here, it could meaningfully improve the premium feel of the inner screen, especially when scrolling, reading, or watching video.

With this wider, shorter design now appearing in CAD renders, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide is shaping up to be more than just a minor variation. It looks like Samsung is preparing a foldable that directly targets a new style of foldable phone—one that emphasizes width, usability, and a different kind of portability, right as foldable competition heats up.
