Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 Could Bring a Major Fix for the Foldable Display Crease
Samsung is preparing to introduce its next generation of foldable phones, and one of the biggest upgrades may be hiding beneath the screen. Ahead of the expected Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra launch, the company has detailed a new display technology designed to reduce one of the most noticeable issues on foldable devices: the center crease.
The new solution is called Flex Titanium, and it could mark a major step forward for foldable smartphone durability. Samsung says the technology makes the main foldable display significantly stiffer than before while still allowing the screen to bend repeatedly without losing flexibility.
At the heart of Flex Titanium is an ultra-thin titanium-alloy film placed directly beneath the OLED panel. This layer is reportedly around 30 percent as thick as a human hair, yet it is said to provide 20 times more stiffness than the plastic films used in earlier foldable models. That extra stiffness helps the display feel more solid and reduces the visible crease that often appears where the screen folds.
Samsung is also using a second titanium-based layer below the display module. This titanium plate provides more stable support when the phone is fully opened. To keep the screen flexible, the plate includes tiny micro-patterned holes. These holes help reduce air gaps between the display module and adhesive, improving structural support without making the panel too rigid to fold.
The result is a display system that is designed to better resist micro-cracks. These tiny cracks can develop over time as the screen is repeatedly folded and unfolded, and they are believed to be one of the main reasons the crease becomes more visible with long-term use. By strengthening the display from within, Samsung appears to be targeting the root cause of the problem rather than simply trying to hide it.
This could be an important upgrade for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series. While foldable phones have improved dramatically in recent years, the display crease remains one of the most common complaints among users. A smoother, firmer inner screen would make the Galaxy Z Fold 8 feel more premium, especially for people who use the large display for reading, gaming, multitasking, or watching videos.
Interestingly, Samsung may be shifting how it uses titanium in its foldable phones. Instead of relying on a titanium backplate for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, the company is expected to use carbon fiber-reinforced plastic in that area. This suggests Samsung may be focusing titanium where it can have the most practical impact: inside the foldable display structure.
If Flex Titanium performs as promised, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra could deliver a stronger, flatter, and more durable folding screen. That would not only improve the look and feel of the device but also help address one of the biggest concerns buyers have about foldable smartphones.
