Samsung’s New True Black 1400 OLED Laptop Panels Set a Higher Bar for Display Brilliance

Samsung has begun full-scale production and supply of its latest Tandem OLED panels for next-generation premium laptops, marking a major step forward for high-end portable displays. The new panels are designed to meet VESA’s DisplayHDR True Black 1400 certification, a demanding standard created for OLED screens that combine extreme brightness with the deep black levels OLED technology is known for.

The DisplayHDR True Black 1400 standard targets advanced OLED displays capable of reaching up to 1,400 nits of peak brightness while maintaining black levels as low as 0.0005 nits. For laptop users, that means brighter highlights, richer contrast, improved HDR performance, and a more immersive viewing experience for movies, games, creative work, and everyday productivity.

Samsung’s new laptop OLED panels go beyond the certification requirement. According to the company, its latest Tandem OLED technology can reach up to 1,600 nits of peak brightness at the panel level. That is around 40 percent brighter than conventional OLED laptop panels, which typically peak at around 1,100 nits.

Brad Jung, Vice President and Head of IT Business Sales at Samsung Display, said the new high-performance OLED panel for laptops demonstrates the company’s advanced materials technology. He added that Samsung Display plans to continue expanding its OLED lineup to deliver more differentiated experiences in the premium laptop market.

One of the biggest upgrades comes from Samsung’s Tandem OLED architecture. Unlike traditional OLED designs, Tandem OLED uses two organic emissive layers instead of one. This structure improves light-emitting efficiency, allowing the panel to produce higher brightness without placing as much stress on each layer.

That efficiency matters for both performance and durability. Because the load is shared between two emissive layers, the panel can achieve stronger brightness while potentially extending its overall lifespan. This is especially important for premium laptops, where users expect vivid displays, long-term reliability, and strong battery efficiency in a thin and portable design.

The first laptop confirmed to use Samsung’s VESA DisplayHDR True Black 1400-certified OLED panel is Lenovo’s Yoga Pro 9i Aura Edition. The device features a 16-inch OLED display and is positioned as a premium laptop for users who want high-end visuals for content creation, media consumption, and productivity.

Samsung is also supplying the new OLED panels to several major laptop brands, including ASUS, Dell, and MSI. More laptops featuring True Black 1400-certified OLED displays are expected to arrive before the end of the year, giving buyers more options across gaming, creator, and premium productivity segments.

For laptop makers, the arrival of brighter Tandem OLED panels could become a key selling point in the next wave of high-end notebooks. OLED displays are already popular for their deep blacks, fast response times, wide color reproduction, and excellent contrast. By raising peak brightness to 1,600 nits, Samsung is addressing one of the main areas where OLED laptop screens have traditionally trailed some mini-LED alternatives.

The improved brightness should be especially useful for HDR content, outdoor visibility, video editing, photo work, and gaming scenes with intense highlights. Combined with OLED’s near-perfect black levels, the new panels could deliver a more dramatic and accurate image than previous laptop OLED displays.

Samsung plans to showcase its new laptop Tandem OLED panel at K-Display 2026, taking place at COEX in Seoul from July 22 to July 24. The event is expected to highlight the company’s latest display innovations as competition in the premium laptop display market continues to grow.

With full-scale supply now underway, Samsung’s Tandem OLED technology is set to play a major role in the next generation of premium laptops. Higher brightness, deeper contrast, improved efficiency, and longer panel life could make these new OLED displays one of the most important upgrades for upcoming high-performance notebooks.
