VESA Introduces DisplayHDR True Black 1400 for Next-Generation OLED Displays

OLED display technology is moving faster than ever, with newer panels delivering higher brightness, richer contrast, and more impressive HDR performance. To keep up with this rapid progress, VESA has introduced a new top-tier certification designed specifically for premium OLED screens: DisplayHDR True Black 1400.

This new standard is now the highest HDR certification level for OLED displays under VESA’s True Black category. It is aimed at high-end monitors, laptops, and entertainment devices that are built to deliver elite-level HDR picture quality for creators, professionals, and demanding consumers.

The biggest requirement for DisplayHDR True Black 1400 is peak brightness. Certified OLED displays must reach at least 1400 nits, a major milestone for OLED technology. At the same time, they must preserve the ultra-deep black levels OLED is known for, with black luminance as low as 0.0005 nits.

That combination is what makes OLED HDR so visually striking. Bright highlights can stand out dramatically against near-perfect blacks, creating a level of contrast that is difficult for many other display technologies to match.

VESA is also requiring certified displays to deliver 700 nits of full-screen brightness. The arrival of this certification reflects how quickly OLED panels are improving. Recent advancements, including Tandem OLED technology, have helped manufacturers push brightness levels higher while maintaining the benefits of self-emissive pixels. These improvements have made OLED displays more suitable for demanding professional and entertainment use cases.

Roland Wooster, Chairman of the VESA Display Performance Metrics Task Group, said the new certification recognizes the latest advances in OLED HDR performance and gives both creators and consumers more confidence when choosing a premium display. He described the new tier as an important step forward for HDR content creation and high-end viewing experiences.

Samsung Display has welcomed the new DisplayHDR True Black 1400 certification and is expected to showcase new OLED and QD-OLED products featuring the standard at upcoming industry events. Lenovo has also moved quickly, becoming the first manufacturer to announce a product certified under the new tier with its Yoga Pro 16 notebook.

More DisplayHDR True Black 1400-certified devices are expected to appear soon, with additional product reveals anticipated at Bilibili World 2026 in Shanghai from July 10 to July 12.
