Samsung Unveils New E Ink Color Display with Wireless Communication

Samsung has recently showcased an innovative display that utilizes electronic ink (E Ink) technology capable of exhibiting color content. Known for its extremely low power consumption, this technology is set to enhance various applications and environments.

Electronic ink displays are not new; they’re the backbone of devices like e-readers, most valued for their readability under bright conditions and low power requirements — they consume energy only when the displayed content is changing. The inherent nature of E Ink technology, with slower refresh rates, makes it ideal for displaying static information rather than content requiring frequent updates.

Samsung’s latest addition, however, is expanding the usage of E Ink displays into the realm of large-scale digital signage. The new Samsung Color E-Paper (EMDX) display integrates the E Ink Spectra 6 technology, boasting a sizable 32-inch screen with a 2,560 x 1,440 resolution and the ability to produce 60,000 colors. With its slim 17.9-millimeter profile and a modest weight of 2.9 kilograms, installation on various surfaces, such as suspended ceilings, becomes a practical option.

This display is enhanced with internal storage of 8GB and includes multiple communication options such as WiFi, Bluetooth, and dual USB-C ports. Mentioned prominently in Samsung’s promotion materials is the device’s low energy consumption—less than 0.005 watts when showing static images, though power would be needed for updating content and wireless operations. Envisioning a versatile use of the device, the incorporation of a rechargeable battery is suggested.

While Samsung has not revealed its pricing, expectations suggest a premium, given its advanced capabilities and specifications.

The ease of assembly is an additional benefit, thanks to the lightweight construction of the panel. Such features point towards a seamless integration of the display into the existing infrastructure of retail stores, public spaces, and professional environments, potentially revolutionizing the way information is presented and updated in these settings.

Though official release details and pricing are still pending, Samsung’s introduction of this large E Ink color display indicates a significant advancement in the evolution of digital displays, with applications that could extend far beyond the current norms.
