During the much-anticipated Galaxy Unpacked 2025 event, Samsung captivated audiences not just with its groundbreaking Galaxy S25 series, but also with its ambitious advancements in artificial intelligence. These technological marvels are designed to differentiate its flagship devices. Yet, what truly captured the hearts of sustainability advocates was the company’s steadfast commitment to environmental responsibility. Samsung unveiled a noteworthy initiative by incorporating recycled cobalt into its Galaxy S25 lineup, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable practices.
As consumers grow increasingly concerned about their environmental impact when purchasing products, Samsung is answering the call. The Galaxy S24 series, launched last year, set a precedent in sustainable technology by being the first to utilize recycled cobalt. With this move, Samsung set a benchmark, urging the industry to follow suit.
Building on this momentum, Samsung has now taken significant strides forward. The tech giant is aggressively expanding this initiative by sourcing cobalt from the batteries of used Galaxy devices and manufacturing waste. This remarkable feat is accomplished through a partnership with organizations that form a Circular Battery Supply Chain. This innovative network efficiently recovers cobalt from outdated Galaxy batteries for use in the new S25 models.
Samsung has meticulously structured its recycling process, which begins with collecting batteries from returned Galaxy devices through trade-in programs or from manufacturing waste. These batteries undergo a thorough inspection for potential hazards before being safely discharged. Once discharged, the batteries are shredded into small pieces to facilitate separation. The shredded material is then processed into a “black mass,” which is chemically treated to extract cobalt and reintegrate it into new devices.
This sophisticated recycling strategy not only showcases Samsung’s cutting-edge innovation but also solidifies its dedication to environmental stewardship. By embracing sustainable practices, Samsung strengthens its brand image, cultivates customer loyalty, and sets a powerful example for the tech industry. This year, Samsung is focused on evolutionary developments that extend beyond hardware and AI capabilities, embracing operational practices that demonstrate resourcefulness and responsibility.
