Samsung may finally be preparing a notable selfie camera upgrade for its next premium smartphones. After several generations of using a largely unchanged 12-megapixel front camera, the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S27 Pro and Galaxy S27 Ultra are rumored to feature a new 16-megapixel front-facing sensor.
The change would mark Samsung’s first meaningful selfie camera refresh on its top Galaxy models in years. The Galaxy S22 Ultra previously came with a 40-megapixel f/2.2 front camera using a 1/2.82-inch sensor. However, with the Galaxy S23 Ultra, Samsung shifted to a 12-megapixel f/2.2 selfie camera with a smaller 1/3.2-inch sensor. That same camera setup has continued through later Ultra models, with only minor lens-related adjustments along the way.
If the latest information is accurate, the Galaxy S27 Pro and Galaxy S27 Ultra could deliver sharper selfies, improved video calls, and better front-camera performance overall thanks to the rumored 16-megapixel sensor. Details such as sensor size, aperture, lens design, and autofocus improvements have not yet been revealed, so it remains unclear how big the real-world upgrade will be.
One interesting possibility is that Samsung could use a square-style sensor for the new selfie camera. This type of design could allow users to capture photos and videos in both portrait and landscape formats without physically rotating the phone. A similar approach has been discussed for competing flagship smartphones, but there is currently no confirmation that Samsung will take this route with the Galaxy S27 series.
It is also not yet known whether the standard Galaxy S27 and Galaxy S27+ will receive the same 16-megapixel front camera. For now, the upgrade is only being associated with the Galaxy S27 Pro and Galaxy S27 Ultra, suggesting Samsung may reserve the improved selfie hardware for its more expensive models.
The Samsung Galaxy S27 series is expected to arrive in the first quarter of 2027, likely sometime between January and March. The lineup is rumored to include four models, continuing Samsung’s strategy of offering multiple options for different users and budgets.
Beyond the selfie camera upgrade, the Galaxy S27 lineup may also gain a wider rollout of Samsung’s Privacy Display feature. This technology, previously limited to the Galaxy S26 Ultra, is designed to help prevent people nearby from viewing sensitive on-screen content. If added across all Galaxy S27 models, it could become one of the series’ most useful everyday privacy features.
There are also rumors of a major rear-camera change for the Galaxy S27 Ultra. Samsung may remove the dedicated 10-megapixel telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom and replace that function with digital zoom. If true, this would be a controversial move, especially for users who rely on optical zoom for portraits, travel shots, and detailed close-up photography.
While the Galaxy S27 series is still far from launch, the rumored selfie camera upgrade could be an important step for Samsung. Front cameras are now used for far more than casual selfies, including social media content, video meetings, livestreaming, and face-based features. A better front camera on the Galaxy S27 Pro and Galaxy S27 Ultra could help Samsung strengthen its position in the premium smartphone market.
