Samsung Foundry is undergoing a strategic pivot, redirecting its efforts from competing head-to-head with industry leader TSMC to focusing on sustainability within the ever-evolving chip market. The Korean tech giant is realigning its process roadmap to prioritize profitability and improve technological precision.
In an effort to enhance fiscal performance, Samsung is concentrating on refining its sub-2nm processes. This shift comes after facing challenges with low yields in earlier nodes like the 3nm GAA, despite its promising technological potential. Realizing that competing directly with TSMC on the cutting-edge frontier isn’t viable under current circumstances, Samsung aims to perfect its existing nodes.
Reports indicate that Samsung plans to launch a 1.4nm process by 2029, adjusting its original schedule by two years. In the meantime, the company intends to stabilize the 2nm process, improving its yield and suitability for industry-wide application. By focusing on these areas, Samsung aims to curtail losses and enhance profitability.
Additionally, Samsung is working on refining its older and still in-demand processes, including 4nm, 5nm, and 8nm. This move acknowledges the enduring market need for these technologies and seeks to leverage them for financial gains. While TSMC continues to pursue advancements like the anticipated A14 (1.4nm) process expected by 2028, Samsung’s strategy is to consolidate its resources and strengthen its position through improved existing technologies.
This strategic redirection represents a crucial decision for Samsung Foundry, potentially leading to a more stable and profitable future if implemented effectively.
