NVIDIA is preparing a new version of its GeForce RTX 5070 Laptop GPU, and it’s a change many gamers and creators will appreciate: more VRAM. Alongside the existing 8GB model, laptop makers will soon offer an RTX 5070 configuration with 12GB of graphics memory, giving buyers another option in one of the most in-demand mainstream gaming GPU tiers.
GeForce RTX 5070 laptops have been especially popular because they balance strong gaming performance with capable AI acceleration. For many shoppers, they hit the sweet spot: fast enough for modern titles, powerful enough for AI-assisted workloads, and typically more attainable than higher-tier gaming notebooks.
The big update here is the jump from 8GB to 12GB of VRAM, a 50% increase in memory capacity. According to NVIDIA, the move is also tied to ongoing memory supply constraints, and adding another memory configuration helps improve availability and gives laptop partners more flexibility when building and shipping new models.
On the specs side, this isn’t a new GPU redesign. The RTX 5070 Laptop GPU in this 12GB variant keeps the same Blackwell-based GB206 silicon and the same core configuration: 4608 cores, 144 TMUs, and 48 ROPs. In other words, performance characteristics should remain similar in many scenarios, but the extra VRAM can matter a lot for certain games and workloads.
What makes the 12GB model possible without changing the memory bus is the type of GDDR7 modules used. The memory interface stays at 128-bit with 24 Gbps GDDR7, but the 12GB version uses higher-density 24Gb (3GB) modules instead of 16Gb (2GB) modules. That allows NVIDIA to expand VRAM capacity while keeping the same layout and overall design approach. Memory bandwidth also remains unchanged at 384 GB/s, since the speed and bus width are the same.
For buyers, the practical benefit of 12GB VRAM is most noticeable in more demanding situations, such as higher texture settings, heavier open-world games, large assets in creation tools, and AI workflows that can be limited by memory capacity. While 8GB can still be perfectly fine for many 1080p and even some 1440p gaming setups depending on settings, 12GB provides more headroom as games and applications continue to grow in memory demands.
Laptop manufacturers will roll out models featuring the RTX 5070 Laptop GPU with 12GB, and the existing 8GB version will continue to be sold. This isn’t a replacement but an addition to the lineup. Pricing is expected to vary slightly compared to 8GB models, but these systems should still generally come in below RTX 5070 Ti laptop configurations, where 12GB is typically standard.
If you’re shopping for a new gaming laptop and you’re targeting the RTX 5070 class, the arrival of a 12GB option could be worth waiting for—especially if you play newer titles with high-resolution texture packs, multitask with demanding creative apps, or want a bit more long-term breathing room without jumping to a higher price tier.
