RTX 4090 Founders Edition Owner Claims Heatsink Part Dropped Off After PC Move

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition Heatsink Piece Reportedly Falls Off After PC Is Moved

High-end graphics cards are no strangers to alarming hardware issues, especially with recent generations facing reports of power connector damage and overheating concerns. But a heatsink segment detaching from a GPU simply after a PC is moved is far less common, and that is exactly what one RTX 4090 Founders Edition owner says happened.

A Reddit user reported that after moving his computer, a triangular section of the heatsink on his NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition came loose and fell off. The detached piece appears to be located near the PCIe connector area, commonly referred to as the gold finger. Once the part separated, the internal heat pipes and soldered joints underneath became visible.

The unusual incident has drawn attention because it gives a rare look at how the Founders Edition cooler is assembled. Rather than being a single solid block, the exposed area suggests the heatsink uses multiple joined sections, with some parts attached through soldered contact points.

According to the user, the graphics card was purchased in August 2023. He contacted NVIDIA for support, but he claims warranty service was denied because the card was considered outside the applicable coverage period. After searching for similar cases, he said he was unable to find another example that matched his issue.

That leaves him with limited options. He can attempt a repair himself or send the card to a professional GPU repair technician. However, repair shops reportedly quoted close to $400 for the job, making a DIY fix tempting if the rest of the card remains functional.

The most likely cause being discussed is long-term stress from repeated heating and cooling cycles. Over time, thermal expansion and contraction can weaken solder joints, especially on large, heavy cooler assemblies exposed to constant temperature changes. If the solder eventually cracks, a heatsink section may lose its grip and separate.

Some users have suggested applying thermal epoxy to reattach the part securely. Others recommended adding thermal paste or thermal pads where needed, along with undervolting the GPU to reduce heat output and limit future thermal stress.

The good news is that the card’s PCB does not appear to be damaged, which means the RTX 4090 may still be recoverable. If the heatsink section can be reattached properly and cooling performance is restored, the GPU could continue operating normally.

Still, this is an unusual reminder that modern flagship graphics cards are not only extremely powerful but also physically complex. With massive coolers, dense heat pipe layouts, and heavy metal assemblies, even small mechanical or soldering failures can lead to unexpected problems over time.
