RPG Maker U2U Reveals Key Visual and Opens Steam Store Page
Gotcha Gotcha Games has shared a fresh look at RPG Maker U2U with the reveal of its official key visual, while also opening the game creation tool’s Steam store page. The new artwork highlights the project’s colorful fantasy atmosphere and gives creators another glimpse at the visual direction of this upcoming RPG development engine.
RPG Maker U2U is designed as the next step for fans of the long-running RPG Maker series, combining familiar creation tools with a new P2D visual style that blends classic 2D RPG presentation with added depth, height, and map layering. The result is a look that should appeal to developers who want the charm of pixel-based RPGs with a more modern sense of space and exploration.
The newly launched Steam page includes updated details and screenshots, including an early look at the Event system, the Event Editor, and the Database/Actor panel. These tools remain central to the RPG Maker experience, allowing users to build characters, create events, manage game data, and shape gameplay without needing advanced programming knowledge.
One of the biggest features in RPG Maker U2U is the P2D Map Editor. This tool lets creators build detailed maps using RPG Maker-style controls while adding a greater sense of depth and verticality. Users can place ready-made objects for fast map creation or assemble scenes from scratch for more control. Traditional 2D RPG Maker tiles can also be used to decorate maps, helping developers create familiar yet more dynamic environments.
To help creators get started quickly, RPG Maker U2U will include more than 100 ready-to-use P2D maps. This makes it easier for beginners to start building a game right away, while experienced developers can use the included maps as a base for more ambitious projects.
Another major advantage is that RPG Maker U2U will launch as a standalone Steam app. Users will not need to install Unity, use Unity Hub, or create a Unity ID. Instead, the software installs and opens like RPG Maker MV or RPG Maker MZ, keeping the workflow simple and approachable.
Gotcha Gotcha Games says core systems such as the Event Editor, database, and battle settings are built to feel familiar to RPG Maker MZ users. This should make the transition smoother for longtime creators, while newcomers can benefit from a streamlined setup that removes many technical barriers.
RPG Maker U2U also introduces true eight-direction movement on P2D maps. Instead of being restricted to the traditional four directions, players can move diagonally as well. Standard four-direction character sprites are automatically adapted for diagonal movement, meaning developers do not need to create extra diagonal character assets.
The P2D map system also supports richer exploration through stairs, slopes, ladders, overpasses, underpasses, elevated paths, and lower terrain. These features allow creators to design towns, dungeons, valleys, cliffs, and multi-level environments that feel more immersive and rewarding to explore.
The newly revealed key visual was created by Japanese illustrator Namaniku ATK. The artwork captures the creative spirit of RPG Maker U2U and reflects the tool’s focus on imagination, fantasy, and accessible game development.
With its standalone setup, familiar RPG Maker workflow, expanded map creation tools, and P2D visual approach, RPG Maker U2U is shaping up to be an appealing option for aspiring game developers and longtime RPG Maker fans alike. Creators interested in building their own role-playing games can now find RPG Maker U2U on Steam and add it to their wishlist.
