Rivian R3 and R3X Impress with Superior Craftsmanship and Retro-Inspired Design

Rivian has been making quite an impression at recent automotive expos, showcasing prototypes of its much-anticipated R3 line. The company has given a lucky few a sneak peek into what promises to be a game-changer in the electric vehicle market.

Set to debut with a base price of approximately $35,000, the Rivian R3 is designed to be an affordable entry into the world of electric cars. It’s set to follow the release of the larger R2, which will arrive in 2026 with a $45,000 price tag. An off-road variant, the R3X, will also be available at around $45,000, as confirmed by Rivian’s CEO RJ Scaringe, making these vehicles not just eco-friendly but also economically appealing.

At the recent Everything Electric Canada 2024 expo, Rivian showcased the R3 to attendees, including the renowned engineer Sandy Munro. Known as the Teardown Titan, Munro was notably impressed with the R3’s build quality. His expert eye caught the meticulously aligned components, although he did note that a final opinion would have to wait until production models are available for evaluation.

Munro also praised the R3’s stylish yet practical design, which harkens back to the classic Golf Country lift-kit but with modern enhancements. One innovative feature that stood out to him was the ergonomic design of the rear gate. By holding a button, you can open just the rear window for quick access, like dropping off a grocery bag, without needing to lift the entire gate.

Other previews of the Rivian R3 and R3X have delved into the interior space, examining seating comfort, especially for taller individuals. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the R3’s suitability for a wide range of users.

One of the exciting features of the R3 and R3X is the inclusion of a NACS charging port. This allows owners to use Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network for extended trips, making long-distance travel more convenient. There is also hope that Rivian will relocate the R3’s charging port to the driver’s side, similar to planned adjustments for the upcoming R2, further enhancing the user experience.

Rivian’s efforts to mix innovative design with practical functionality have certainly grabbed attention, promising an exciting addition to the electric vehicle market.
