Boom’s macOS camera app lets you customize your video call appearance

Revolutionize Your Video Calls with Boom’s Customizable macOS Camera App

Maintaining connections across different time zones can often be a challenge, especially during video calls. If you’ve ever found yourself spending precious moments explaining your local time, location, and weather, there’s now a simpler way, thanks to an innovative app named Boom. This engaging tool, tailored for Mac users, is transforming the video conferencing experience and making it easier—and more fun—to communicate crucial information effortlessly.

Founded by ex-Shopify engineers Robleh Jama and Krishna Satya, Boom has launched as a freemium product designed to integrate smoothly with all major video conferencing platforms, such as Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams. The app allows you to personalize your video call presence with dynamic themes that can include your name, job title, location, time, and even weather updates. This customization can significantly enhance how you present yourself during virtual meetings.

Beyond just informative themes, Boom adds a layer of interactivity to your calls. Users can sprinkle their meetings with on-screen effects, stickers, and GIFs, making conversations more lively and engaging. And if you’re particular about how you look on camera, Boom’s got you covered. The app offers controls to adjust brightness, contrast, saturation, shadow, hue, and exposure, along with preset themes to make your appearance pop just right.

A unique feature offered by Boom is the ability to design an off-camera screen. Instead of showing a blank screen, you can display a customized design, making sure your professional image remains intact even when you’re not on camera. Boom is also on the brink of launching a feature for tracking meeting times, which could be a boon for productivity.

The concept for Boom originated from the founders’ own experiences during the remote work era at Shopify. They found themselves frustrated with the limited capabilities of standard video conferencing tools despite having high-quality hardware. This frustration sparked the creation of Boom, with a mission to make virtual meetings more enjoyable and engaging.

Following extensive testing last year, Boom had its public release in April. Initially offered exclusively as a paid service, the app has since transitioned to a freemium model. Users can access the virtual camera, themes, and basic reactions at no cost, while advanced features like premium themes, custom branding, and enhanced screen sharing options are available through a subscription—priced at $7 per month, $70 per year, or $199 for a lifetime license.

Exciting developments are on the horizon for Boom. The company plans to introduce a timeboxing feature aimed at streamlining discussions by setting time limits for specific topics. Future updates will bring even more functionality, including an agenda tracker, dynamic polls, and interactive quizzes.

Interestingly, Boom’s co-founders are committed to an independent growth strategy, foregoing venture capital in favor of organic development. Their vision is to make Boom an indispensable tool that continues evolving profitably over the next decade.

In their own words, “We’re pretty set on taking a more independent path and not going the VC route. Our goal is to make Boom so useful that it grows organically and profitably for 10+ years. If we can do that while staying indie, that’s the dream.”

Boom is setting a new standard for video conferencing, making remote communication more colorful, interactive, and efficient. Try it out to enrich your virtual meetings and make your remote interactions as seamless as possible.
