Finnish game developer Remedy Entertainment has recently made the decision to halt the development of their internally codenamed project “Kestrel,” as they realign their focus towards other ongoing and future projects in their game portfolio.
Originally presented as a co-operative multiplayer experience that was premium, or paid, “Kestrel” was being developed by the in-house team at Remedy. Designed to be co-financed and co-published in collaboration with Tencent Games, this project served as a reboot from an earlier conception known as “Vanguard.”
Despite early insights that held promise, “Kestrel” was still in its nascent conceptual phase when the decision to cancel was made. Remedy’s CEO, Tero Virtala, provided some context behind the strategic shift:
“While ‘Codename Kestrel’ exhibited potential at the outset, it was ultimately at a very early stage of conceptualization. Our portfolio’s other projects have made significant progress and are entering the subsequent phases of development. By redirecting our focus, we reap benefits, specifically the ability to move our skilled ‘Kestrel’ developers to these other important game projects. Similarly, our support functions can concentrate more thoroughly on their operations, all part of our overarching strategy to ensure our game projects continue to progress effectively.”
Virtala expressed gratitude towards the “Kestrel” crew for their commendable efforts and the useful knowledge they accrued, even though the project was discontinued for the broader benefit of the company. He also extended thanks to Tencent for their professionalism and the support they have offered throughout the partnership.
As Remedy Entertainment moves forwards, their reprioritization underscores the dynamic environment of game development. There is a constant evaluation of the potential, resources, and market trends necessary to maintain a successful gaming portfolio. While details on Remedy’s upcoming projects remain under wraps, their revised focus indicates a strategic approach that anticipates new gaming experiences for their audience.
