Reddit’s AI Ambitions Target Google Users Beyond Community Browsers

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman recently highlighted the two main types of users on the platform: Scrollers and Seekers. Scrollers are those who dive into community discussions, exploring topics they are passionate about, from culinary adventures in r/sourdough to the latest celebrity gossip in r/popculturechat. On the other hand, Seekers arrive with specific questions, often turning to Google and adding “Reddit” to their searches to find authentic advice and opinions.

To cater specifically to Seekers, Reddit has introduced Reddit Answers, an AI-powered chatbot that provides detailed answers and summaries from existing Reddit posts. This new feature is quickly gaining popularity. Since its beta launch in December, Reddit Answers boasts over 1 million weekly active users. The service is now expanding across the globe, reaching countries like Australia, the U.K., Canada, and India.

Currently, Reddit Answers is accessible as a separate feature within the app’s navigation bar. However, future plans aim to integrate it more deeply into the platform. Huffman envisions merging Answers with the main search box, allowing users to input full queries instead of just keywords.

This tool isn’t just about enhancing user experience; it’s about making Reddit a go-to destination for quick, reliable information. Huffman mentioned integrating Answers right from the start of a user’s journey on Reddit. This would help new users discover the wealth of knowledge Reddit offers and ensure they find exactly what they’re seeking.

One significant advantage of this approach is its potential to reduce reliance on Google Search. A recent change in Google’s algorithm led to some fluctuations in Reddit’s user growth, which had previously concerned investors despite the company outperforming earnings projections. By offering a robust internal search mechanism, Reddit aims to lessen the impact of external changes on its growth trajectory.

During a recent earnings call, Reddit revealed impressive financial results, reporting a 61% year-over-year revenue increase, reaching $392.4 million, with an adjusted EBITDA of $115.3 million. The platform’s daily active users also grew to 108.1 million, marking a 31% increase from the previous year. Looking ahead, Reddit estimates continued revenue growth and strong earnings in the upcoming quarter.
