Qualcomm’s Next Flagship Chip Could Have an Even More Confusing Name
Qualcomm may be preparing a surprising branding change for its next-generation flagship smartphone processors, and the new name could be even more confusing than expected.
According to a fresh leak from well-known tipster Digital Chat Station, Qualcomm’s upcoming 2nm mobile platforms may arrive under two names: Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. If accurate, this would mean Qualcomm is bringing its “Extreme” branding from its laptop-focused Snapdragon X series into its premium smartphone chip lineup.
For months, rumors suggested that the higher-end version of the chip would be called Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro. However, the latest information now points to “Extreme” replacing “Pro” as the name for Qualcomm’s top-tier mobile platform.
The standard chip is reportedly identified internally as SM8950 and may launch as the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6. The more powerful version, said to carry the SM8975 model number, is now rumored to be called Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. Engineering samples of the SM8975 have also reportedly appeared with labels such as SM8975-100-BC, adding more weight to speculation that Qualcomm is testing the chip ahead of launch.
Both processors are expected to be manufactured using TSMC’s advanced 2nm N2P process. This would mark a major milestone for Qualcomm, as these chips could become its first mobile processors built on a 2nm-class node. A move to 2nm should bring improvements in performance, power efficiency, and thermal behavior, although real-world results will depend on final hardware and device tuning.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 is rumored to feature a 2+3+3 Oryon CPU layout. It may also include an Adreno 845 GPU, 12 MB of GMEM, and support for LPDDR5X memory. This configuration would likely target premium Android phones with high-end performance, improved gaming capabilities, and stronger AI processing.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, meanwhile, is expected to push things further. The leak claims it could feature a more powerful Adreno 850 GPU, 18 MB of GMEM, GPU-based AI accelerators, and support for faster LPDDR6 memory. If true, this version may be aimed at ultra-premium smartphones, gaming phones, and performance-focused flagships.
The use of the “Extreme” name is notable because Qualcomm already uses similar branding for its Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme laptop platform. Extending that naming scheme to mobile chips could help Qualcomm create a clearer performance ladder across smartphones and PCs, though the full name “Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6” is undeniably a mouthful.
Chip naming has become increasingly complicated across the industry, with companies adding terms like AI, Ultra, Max, Pro, Elite, and Extreme to product lines. Qualcomm appears to be following that trend, but the final branding may still change before launch.
For now, Qualcomm has not officially confirmed the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 or Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 names. The company is expected to reveal its next flagship mobile platform during the Snapdragon Summit, scheduled for September 22–24 in Maui.
If the leak proves accurate, Qualcomm’s next-generation Snapdragon chips could bring a major leap in smartphone performance, advanced AI features, stronger graphics power, and a new naming strategy that may take some time for buyers to get used to.
