Qualcomm appears to be expanding its flagship mobile chip lineup with a quieter, more targeted variant: the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 V Series. Based on Qualcomm’s official specifications, this new version keeps much of the premium platform intact but scales back the graphics hardware, placing it in an interesting middle ground between the full Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and the regular Snapdragon 8 Gen 5.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 V Series, identified as SM8850-1-AB, is essentially a GPU-binned version of the standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. That means Qualcomm has retained the same core strengths in areas such as CPU performance, AI processing, and connectivity, while trimming the graphics side to create a more differentiated model.
The biggest change is found in the Adreno GPU configuration. The standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 uses a 3-slice Adreno 840 GPU running at 1.2GHz, while the special Galaxy variant pushes that further with a 3-slice GPU clocked at 1.3GHz. By comparison, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 V Series features a 2-slice Adreno 840 GPU running at 1.2GHz.
That reduction matters because GPU slices directly affect graphics throughput, especially in demanding mobile games, high-refresh-rate rendering, and other graphics-heavy workloads. With only two GPU slices, the V Series moves closer to the non-Elite Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, which uses a 2-slice Adreno 829 GPU clocked slightly higher at around 1.225GHz.
However, the V Series still has one notable advantage over the regular Snapdragon 8 Gen 5: cache. Qualcomm’s spec sheet lists 12MB of Adreno High Performance Memory for the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 V Series. That is lower than the 18MB included with the standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, but still far above the 2MB cache found in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5.
In real-world use, this means the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 V Series should still deliver strong overall performance, particularly in CPU-driven apps, AI workloads, multitasking, photography, and connectivity. The main compromise is likely to appear in sustained gaming performance and GPU-heavy benchmarks, where the full Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 should maintain a clear lead.
The rest of the chip appears to remain aligned with the standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. Qualcomm has not reduced the CPU, NPU, or modem configuration, which suggests the V Series is designed for devices that want flagship-class responsiveness and AI features without necessarily offering the highest possible graphics performance.
This makes the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 V Series an important addition to Qualcomm’s premium chip family. It gives smartphone makers more flexibility, allowing them to build high-end devices at potentially lower cost or with different thermal and power targets, while still advertising an Elite-class platform.
Xiaomi has already confirmed that the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 V Series will power the Redmi K100 Pro. The device is expected to launch in China on August 11 alongside the Redmi K100 Pro Max. That launch should give consumers the first real look at how Qualcomm’s new GPU-binned flagship chip performs in an actual smartphone.
For buyers, the key takeaway is simple: the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 V Series is still a high-end chipset, but it is not identical to the full Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. It keeps the premium CPU, AI engine, and modem, while dialing back the GPU to a level closer to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5. For everyday performance, it should still feel fast and responsive. For serious mobile gamers, the difference may be more noticeable.
Qualcomm’s move also signals a broader strategy for flagship Android phones. Instead of offering only one top-tier chip, the company is creating more layered options within the Snapdragon 8 family. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 V Series may become a popular choice for performance-focused phones that want flagship branding and strong efficiency, but do not need the absolute highest graphics configuration available.
