Forza Horizon 5’s upcoming release on the PlayStation 5 is generating buzz, but not entirely for the right reasons. While the Mexican-themed racing game is set to bring its vibrant festival of speed to Sony’s console, one catch is causing ripples in the gaming community: it requires a Microsoft account to play. This requirement has sparked disappointment among PS5 players, particularly because they anticipated a seamless integration without the need for additional accounts beyond their PlayStation Network.
Gamers were already disheartened by the absence of a physical disc option. With the game being offered only as a digital download, the stipulation to tether it to a Microsoft account adds another layer of complexity. With these digital-only titles, players worry that their $60 investments might not have the longevity they hoped for, especially since the integration between Xbox and Sony consoles is not guaranteed to last.
Moreover, unlike some other cross-platform releases, the PS5 version of Forza Horizon 5 does not carry over levels from other platforms. So, players looking to experience this driving extravaganza will have to start anew on their progression journey. To somewhat sweeten the deal, all editions of the game will come packed with the Horizon Realms content pack.
The requirement for multiple accounts is not entirely new, as Sony themselves faced backlash for a similar practice with Helldivers 2, where Steam users were required to link to a PSN account. Although Sony eventually reversed this decision, it’s unclear if Microsoft will take similar steps with Forza Horizon 5.
In the realm of modern gaming, the simplicity of just popping a disc into a console and diving into gameplay seems to be fading away. Managing numerous usernames and passwords is now part and parcel of the gaming experience, reflecting the interconnected nature of today’s digital gaming universe. As Forza Horizon 5 edges towards its April 29 release, gamers will weigh up these pros and cons to decide if the racing adventure is worth navigating through the account maze.
