Primland: The Magus

Primland’s “The Magus” Finds a Fresh Publishing Home at Phoenixx

Phoenixx has officially stepped in as the publisher for Primland: The Magus, an eye-catching 2D dark fantasy action game in development from D.S.W. Games. The game is currently planned to launch on Windows PC via Steam later in 2026, bringing its grim island setting, intense combat, and striking pixel art to PC players.

Alongside the publishing announcement, the developers also rolled out a fresh update to the playable demo. If you’ve been waiting for a reason to jump in (or return), this update expands what you can experience right now. The demo lets players progress through the story up to the first half of Chapter 2, and it now includes a new feature called the “Gem Mining Action” mechanic, giving you another way to interact with the world beyond combat.

Primland: The Magus drops you onto an island that has become a living hell. You play as Magus, a girl burdened with the ominously named “Unending Curse of Carrion,” as she fights through brutal encounters and pushes deeper into a mystery soaked in tragedy. The game blends dynamic 2D action with intricate pixel art and a huge number of animation frames, aiming for a heavy, visceral feel where every strike and movement lands with impact.

The story begins with a catastrophe on a remote island. Children were suddenly attacked by a mysterious group dressed in white robes. Then, in a horrific twist, the attackers themselves transformed into undying carrions. In the aftermath, Magus is left as the sole survivor. As she endures the nightmare around her, she develops a strange pain in her chest—an ominous signal that something inside her is changing, awakening, or breaking.

As Magus struggles to survive, danger closes in from multiple sides. The “Undying Putrid” and survivors connected to the white-robed cult begin to move in the shadows, pursuing her across the cursed island. To stay alive, you’ll need to harness Magus’s supernatural abilities and fight back against horrors that refuse to die.

A major part of your progression revolves around “Mementos,” remnants tied to the island’s tragic past. As Magus explores, she finds these Mementos and can combine them to unlock dormant power. The system is built around experimentation: discover the right combinations, and you can awaken hidden “powers” that dramatically change how Magus fights.

These Memento-driven abilities are described as forbidden skills—strong, distinctive, and flexible enough to support different playstyles. The idea is to let players shape a personal combat approach by collecting, mixing, and matching what they find, rather than being locked into a single build.

The demo and game details also highlight several key characters shaped by the island’s tragedy:
Magus, the protagonist, is a girl left behind on an island stained by the remains of children and smothered by the miasma of the Putrid Flesh Curse.
Rizel is another survivor, constantly on the run and hunted by those in white.
The Giant Carrion stands among the most dangerous of the carrions, attacking Magus with overwhelming force—though its motives may not be as simple as pure hatred.
Faries is a young man wearing the same white clothing as those tied to the island’s disaster.
Zeto is a tall, mysterious woman who carries herself like an ancient warrior.

With Phoenixx now set to publish, a newly updated demo, and a planned 2026 release window on PC, Primland: The Magus is shaping up as one to watch for fans of dark fantasy games, pixel-art action, and punishing 2D combat wrapped in a haunting mystery.
