Press Play to Participate: Netflix Teases Its Most Interactive Upgrade Yet

Streaming is about to feel a lot less passive. Netflix is rolling out live content with real-time interaction, setting the stage for viewers to do more than just watch. The plan goes beyond films and series to include live shows, sporting events, and comedy specials where audiences can actively take part in what happens on screen.

The platform has already proven it can scale. During the Paul vs. Tyson boxing match, its infrastructure supported 65 million simultaneous streams without a hiccup, a strong signal that truly massive, live interactive events are ready for prime time.

Interactive experiments are not entirely new here. During the live show Dinner Time with David Chang, viewers used their phones to vote on which dishes would be cooked next, a glimpse of how second-screen participation can shape the experience. That concept is getting a major upgrade in 2026 with the reboot of Star Search. For the first time, audiences will be able to cast votes live using a smartphone or their remote, but only during the broadcast window, reinforcing the urgency and excitement of tuning in on time.

There is a visual makeover on the way too. The user interface is being overhauled with animated start pages that create immersive, theme-based worlds. Early examples include a Halloween world and a Bridgerton-themed world, designed to pull viewers into a mood the moment they open the app.

On mobile, Netflix is testing vertical video feeds with short, snackable clips meant for quick viewing, a format that mirrors how many people already discover content on their phones. A new Moments feature will also make shows and movies more shareable by letting users send favorite scenes directly to friends, turning standout moments into instant conversation starters.

Taken together, these updates push streaming toward interactive live entertainment, real-time voting, and more personalized discovery. Expect a richer home screen, social-friendly clips, and appointment-worthy live events that invite you to join in rather than just sit back.
