Recent data stemming from Valve’s Steam Hardware & Software Survey has presented an interesting shift in the use of operating systems among its user base. According to the findings in the July 2024 report, Windows 10 has witnessed a resurgence in popularity among Steam gamers. The previous generation operating system has seen an increase of 0.74% more users throughout the month, signaling a sustained preference for the platform.
Conversely, there’s been a noticeable dip in the user base for Windows 11, which has experienced a decrease of 0.82%, bringing its usage down to 45.81% among Steam users. This downtrend in Windows 11’s adoption aligns with larger market share indicators, as windows 10 holds 64.63% of the overall market according to Statcounter, compared to Windows 11’s 30.88%.
Despite the push from Microsoft to usher users into the new era of Windows with the introduction of Windows 11, many seem to be clinging onto Windows 10. The reasons may vary, from compatibility concerns and user comfort to perceived reliability of the earlier version. It’s clear that Windows 10 remains a strong contender in operating system choices despite the presence of its successor.
Interestingly, the report also points out that there remains a small segment of users who are utilizing even older versions of Windows. Both Windows 7 and 8/8.1 still account for a combined usage of 0.49%, despite Valve officially ending support for these operating systems. This hints at a dedicated group of users who are either reluctant or unable to upgrade due to specific needs or constraints.
Broadening the scope of the operating systems utilized by Steam users, the report indicates that 96.55% run some version of Windows, while MacOS and Linux trail with 1.37% and 2.08%, respectively. Among the Linux distributions, Arch Linux emerges as the frontrunner with 0.17%, followed by Linux Mint 21.3 and Ubuntu 22.04.
The shifting trends in operating system preferences among Steam users highlight an intriguing dynamic in software adoption. As the gaming community continues to evolve, it will be insightful to keep an eye on how these preferences change over time and what this might indicate about wider consumer behavior in the tech landscape.
