Pocket FM Empowers Storytellers with AI for Crafting Narratives and Building Suspense

Pocket FM, an innovative audio series platform from India, is striving to become the Netflix of audio by creating content that resonates deeply with its audience. To achieve this, the company is harnessing the power of artificial intelligence to accelerate content production and tailor stories to user preferences.

The company, backed by Lightspeed, is equipping its writers with AI tools to enhance storytelling. These tools suggest improved episode endings and enrich narratives, aiming to streamline the writing process and boost creativity.

Already utilizing AI-generated voices through platforms like ElevenLabs, Pocket FM is expanding its AI capabilities to assist with writing. These tools, now available to all its writers, promise to reduce the time taken to produce episodes.

Introducing CoPilot: a writing tool designed to aid writers in crafting engaging stories. CoPilot can convert narrative styles into dialogues, perform “beat analysis” for genre-specific engagement, and offer basic editing functions like shortening, expanding, and text generation through prompts.

By analyzing extensive data, Pocket FM developed features to heighten character conflicts and recommend thrilling episode endings. AI also suggests sound tags for background effects, while automatically creating character bios and plot summaries for easy reference during writing.

Moreover, CoPilot’s review capabilities ensure plot consistency, grammar accuracy, and provide qualitative feedback on episodes.

Under the hood, Pocket FM focuses on training smaller AI models to maintain story context and character relationships, while user feedback helps inject more drama into narratives.

Internationally, Pocket FM is making strides with adaptation tools that translate and culturally localize content. This initiative debuted successfully in Germany, accelerating market engagement significantly and boosting in-app revenue beyond $700,000 by June.

In the U.S., AI-enhanced series already contribute 10% of playtime, generating $7 million in revenue over the past year while cutting production costs substantially.

The company’s adoption of AI has initiated a rapid expansion of content creation, with up to 1,000 pilots released monthly. Alongside audio shows, initiatives like Pocket Toons for comic strips, and exploration into video content, signal Pocket FM’s ambition to diversify its offerings further.

Future plans include launching a proprietary large language model (LLM) next year, integrating writing assistance, adaptation features, dramatization, and narrative consistency, reducing reliance on separate AI models.

However, AI integration hasn’t come without challenges. Workforce reductions, diminished writer royalties, and legal issues in California over employment conditions highlight potential downsides.

Despite these concerns, Pocket FM emphasizes its dedication to quality. The company’s AI moderation framework checks for duplication, copyright issues, and overall content health to ensure high standards before content goes live.

There’s also an ongoing debate about AI’s impact on creative reliance and content quality. In some regions, AI-generated content is surpassing human input, raising concerns about quality and user engagement.

However, Pocket FM argues that AI tools enhance the creative process, allowing writers to focus on editing and refining content rather than complete rewrites, thereby improving the quality and relevance of the output.

As Pocket FM continues to innovate and expand, it remains committed to evolving its platform while maintaining a focus on delivering captivating and high-quality audio content to its global audience.
