PNG 3 Arrives: A New Era with HDR and Animation Capabilities

The PNG file format is undergoing a major upgrade for the first time in over two decades, with the introduction of PNG Version 3. This update comes at a time when newer formats like JPEG, AVIF, and WebP have gained popularity due to their efficient compression and cutting-edge features. The latest version of PNG stands out by supporting HDR and animations, catering to modern digital needs.

Originally introduced in 1995 and endorsed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) in 1996, the PNG format has remained a staple for high-quality images. The second version came out in 2003, and since 2021, a dedicated W3C team has been working on this latest iteration, which became a W3C standard on June 24, 2025.

PNG offers two significant benefits over JPEG: it allows for lossless compression, providing superior image quality albeit at larger file sizes, and it retains the alpha channel for transparency. PNG Version 3 enhances the format by now allowing it to store EXIF data, akin to JPEGs, thus embedding metadata like camera details and GPS coordinates. Additionally, while Animated PNGs (APNGs) have been around for a while, they are now officially part of the W3C standard, promising broader software support.

The most thrilling development is the introduction of HDR support in PNGs, achieved with minimal file size increase—only 16 bytes larger than SDR PNGs. This makes PNGs more versatile for displaying high dynamic range content.

Developed in partnership with major players like Adobe, Apple, and Google, PNG Version 3 enjoys robust support across various platforms, including all Chromium-based browsers, Firefox, macOS, iOS, Adobe Photoshop, and DaVinci Resolve. This widespread adoption means HDR PNGs are expected to become common in areas like news broadcasts, where they can enhance the display of subtitles and overlays.

Looking ahead, the World Wide Web Consortium is already planning further enhancements for the PNG standard, focusing on modernizing lossless compression techniques to reduce file sizes and improving the compatibility of HDR images on SDR displays and vice versa.
