PlayStation 5 Pro Set for Second Half of 2024 Release in Anticipation of GTA VI

Sony is reportedly preparing to launch the PlayStation 5 Pro in the latter half of 2024, according to industry analysts. This strategic move is aimed at revitalizing consumer enthusiasm and coinciding with the highly anticipated launch of Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA VI), which is expected in 2025.

With a goal to rekindle interest in its premier gaming console, Sony appears to be responding to the decline in sales forecasts by offering a more advanced version of the PlayStation 5. This new “Pro” version is speculated to feature considerable upgrades that could appeal to the gaming community.

Leaks and speculations point to the PlayStation 5 Pro potentially housing AMD’s “Viola” APU, which combines an 8-core Zen 2 CPU with an advanced RDNA 3-based GPU, supposedly incorporating 60 compute units and a processing speed ranging between 2.5 to 2.8 GHz. Additionally, the PS5 Pro might see an impressive memory boost, with rumors about 16 GB of GDDR6 memory operating at 18 Gbps.

Serkan Toto, CEO of Tokyo-based Kantan Games, shared with media sources, “There seems to be a broad consensus in the game industry that Sony is indeed preparing a launch of a PS5 Pro in the second half of 2024. And Sony will want to make sure to have a great piece of hardware ready when GTA VI hits in 2025, a launch that will be a shot in the arm for the entire gaming industry.”

The PlayStation 5 has been a formidable presence in the gaming console market since its launch in November 2020. Nonetheless, after more than three years in circulation, Sony’s recent financial reports indicate a significant decrease in sales forecasts for the current fiscal year — from 25 million down to 21 million units — and highlight a worrying stagnation in profit margins within its gaming division.

This fiscal predicament raises questions about whether Sony will opt to reduce the price of the existing PS5 models, a common strategy historically employed with past consoles to sustain market interest. George Jijiashvili, a senior principal analyst at Omdia, proposed that current profitability challenges could discourage Sony from implementing price cuts on the current PS5 lineup.

The anticipation for the PlayStation 5 Pro continues, with expectations for a performance-driven device that could seamlessly run next-generation games like GTA VI, consequently providing a significant stimulus for the gaming sector upon its arrival.

Interested consumers can find the current PlayStation 5 available for purchase on platforms such as Amazon.com, as they await the potential of the enhanced PlayStation 5 Pro.
