Google Pixel 11a leak reveals Tensor G6 chip, brighter 120Hz display, and new modem
Google’s next affordable Pixel phone is already starting to take shape. Although the Pixel 11 lineup is expected to arrive on August 12, early details about the Pixel 11a have now surfaced, giving fans a first look at what could be one of Google’s most interesting mid-range smartphones yet.
According to the latest leak, the Pixel 11a is being developed under the internal codename “Formosan.” The device is expected to launch in multiple regional versions, with model numbers reportedly listed as GQ05X for global markets, GP1BL for Japan, and G4XQ2 for North America.
The leak also suggests Google is preparing four color options for the Pixel 11a: Obsidian, Olive, Frost, and Fog. In simpler terms, buyers may be able to choose between black, green, purple, and silver finishes.
One of the biggest upgrades could be the processor. The Pixel 11a is reportedly set to use Google’s Tensor G6 chip, codenamed “Malibu.” That would be a notable step forward, especially because the Pixel 10a was said to stick with an older-generation Tensor chip instead of moving to the latest platform.
The Tensor G6 is also expected to be paired with Google’s Titan M3 security chip, which should help strengthen on-device protection for sensitive data, biometric security, and system-level safeguards. For users who value privacy and long-term software support, this could make the Pixel 11a a more appealing option in the mid-range Android phone market.
The leaked specifications also mention a PowerVR C-Series GPU, listed as the CXTP-48-1536. This graphics unit has previously been associated with the Tensor G6 platform, suggesting the Pixel 11a may receive meaningful performance improvements for gaming, app responsiveness, and AI-powered camera features.
Another important change could come in connectivity. The Pixel 11a is rumored to use a MediaTek M90 modem, reportedly matching the modem expected in the rest of the Pixel 11 series. If accurate, this would mean Google is keeping its more affordable A-series phone closer to its flagship models in terms of network hardware.
The Pixel 11a is said to include 8 GB of RAM, which should be enough for smooth multitasking, everyday app use, and Google’s AI-focused Android features. While it may not compete directly with premium phones offering higher memory configurations, 8 GB remains a solid amount for a mid-range Pixel device.
On the front, the phone is rumored to feature a 6.3-inch display with a resolution of 1,080 x 2,424 pixels. The panel reportedly supports a variable refresh rate between 60Hz and 120Hz, which should make scrolling, animations, and supported games feel much smoother than standard 60Hz screens.
Brightness could also be a highlight. The leak claims the Pixel 11a display may reach up to 2,250 nits for HDR content and a peak brightness of 3,350 nits. If these numbers are accurate, outdoor visibility could be significantly improved, making the phone easier to use in bright sunlight.
Battery capacity may be one area where Google makes a small change. The Pixel 11a is listed with a minimum battery capacity of 4,870 mAh. That is slightly lower than the Pixel 10a’s reported 5,000 mAh minimum capacity and 5,100 mAh rated capacity. However, real-world battery life will likely depend on the efficiency of the Tensor G6 chip, display tuning, modem performance, and Google’s software optimizations.
The camera system is still mostly under wraps, but the leak points to a new front-facing camera sensor known only by the codename “dokkaebi.” While no detailed specifications were shared, a new selfie camera could improve video calls, social media photos, and face-based authentication.
Face Unlock may also receive a major improvement. The source claims Google has enhanced Face Unlock across the Pixel 11 series, making it faster, more secure, and more reliable in low-light conditions. If the Pixel 11a benefits from those same upgrades, it could offer a more convenient unlocking experience without sacrificing security.
Interestingly, the leak also mentions “marmoset” as an early codename for the Pixel 12a, suggesting Google is already planning ahead for its next generation of budget-friendly Pixel phones.
For now, the Pixel 11a remains unofficial, and specifications could change before launch. Still, if this leak is accurate, Google’s next A-series phone may bring several meaningful upgrades, including the Tensor G6 processor, a brighter 120Hz display, improved connectivity, stronger security hardware, and a refreshed front camera.
