Pixel 10a Scores a Pro-Level Upgrade—But Pays for It With a Big Step Back

Google’s Pixel 10a looks set to arrive very soon, with pre-orders reportedly opening next week on February 18. And even before Google makes everything official, leaks have already painted a clear picture of what to expect from the upcoming budget-friendly Pixel.

The biggest headline is a charging upgrade that could make day-to-day use far more convenient. A newly surfaced spec list suggests the Pixel 10a will support 45W wired fast charging. If that holds true, it would be a major jump from the previous generation and an especially surprising move for Google’s “a” series. It would also put the Pixel 10a’s wired charging on the same level as the Pixel 10 Pro XL, giving buyers a flagship-like perk without the flagship price.

What makes this even more interesting is that the battery capacity itself is said to remain the same as the Pixel 9a. In other words, the improvement isn’t about getting a bigger battery—it’s about getting back to 100% much faster. For many people, quicker top-ups during the day matter just as much as total battery life, so this could be the practical upgrade that stands out most when comparing the Pixel 10a vs Pixel 9a.

However, there’s also a potential downside that may influence buying decisions: the processor. The Pixel 10a is rumored to stick with the Tensor G4 instead of upgrading to the newer Tensor G5. That would mean the phone may not get the same performance and efficiency leap expected from the Pixel 10 lineup, and it could affect things like heavy gaming performance, sustained speeds, and long-term “future-proof” confidence for buyers deciding whether to go budget or step up to a flagship model.

Beyond charging and the chipset, the rest of the rumored Pixel 10a specs appear to be familiar. The display is expected to remain a 6.3-inch panel with a 2,424 x 1,080 resolution. Connectivity may get a modest bump thanks to Bluetooth 6.0, and the phone is rumored to be slightly lighter than before at 183 grams, down from 186 grams on the Pixel 9a.

For now, Google has only teased the pre-order timing, not full release availability. With February 18 close, the official announcement should fill in the remaining gaps—especially around pricing, regional rollout, and any surprises Google kept out of the leaks.

If the rumored 45W wired fast charging is real, the Pixel 10a could become one of the most appealing midrange Android phones for people who want faster charging without paying premium prices. But if the Tensor G4 rumor also proves accurate, shoppers will likely weigh that convenience upgrade against the performance compromise before hitting “pre-order.”
