Path of Exile 2 Surges Past 400,000 Steam Players After Major Update

Path of Exile 2 sees huge Steam player surge after Return of the Ancients update

Path of Exile 2 is enjoying a major comeback on Steam following the release of its Return of the Ancients update and a limited-time free-to-play weekend. The action RPG reached its highest player count since entering Early Access, showing that interest in Grinding Gear Games’ dark fantasy sequel remains strong.

During the event, Path of Exile 2 climbed to more than 421,000 concurrent players on Steam, marking the first time it has passed the 400,000-player milestone since its launch window. That impressive number made it one of the most-played games on Steam over the weekend and gave the Early Access title a major boost in visibility.

The free weekend certainly helped bring curious players through the door, but the spike was not only about free access. Return of the Ancients arrived as one of Path of Exile 2’s biggest updates so far, adding fresh story content, expanded endgame features, new progression systems, and quality-of-life improvements aimed at both returning veterans and newcomers.

One of the most notable additions is a new build planner, designed to make character creation more approachable. Path of Exile has always been known for its deep and complex customization, which can be intimidating for new players. By giving players better tools to plan effective builds, Path of Exile 2 may be able to reduce the early learning curve and keep more players engaged.

The next big test for Path of Exile 2 will be player retention. A free weekend can create a temporary spike, but long-term success depends on whether players continue logging in after the event ends. For an Early Access game, maintaining momentum is especially important, as regular updates and community feedback play a major role in shaping the final experience.

So far, the signs are encouraging. Path of Exile 2 continues to hold a Mostly Positive rating on Steam, and player response to Return of the Ancients has been largely favorable. If Grinding Gear Games can keep delivering meaningful updates, improving the endgame, and making the game more welcoming without sacrificing its trademark depth, Path of Exile 2 could remain one of the standout action RPGs on PC.

With its latest player count milestone, Path of Exile 2 has proven that its audience is still very much alive. The challenge now is turning that renewed attention into lasting momentum throughout Early Access.
